(Tuesday, December 6, 2005) -- American defender Steve Cherundolo is making a name for himself at Hannover 96 in German Bundesliga by preventing goals, but it was his early tally Saturday that led to a 2-0 road victory win at Borussia Dortmund before a shocked 72,000 at Westfalenstadion.

It was Hannover's first win at Dortmund since 1964.

Dortmund, as expected, had the better of the early run of play, but in the 16th minute, Cherundolo slipped unnoticed up the right side. When Hannover striker Vahid Hashemian intercepted a poor pass by defender David Odonker, he switched the ball to the unmarked Cherundolo, whose right-footer went in off goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller for a 1-0 lead.

With its defense staying organized and allowing the home side few chances, Hannover protected its advantage until the 83rd minute when Christoph Dabrowski made it 2-0.

United States goalkeeper Kasey Keller and Borussia Monchengladbach let a home match slip away Saturday in a 1-0 loss to FC Nurnberg. A somewhat jet lagged Keller, who had made a mid-week round-trip to Los Angeles to receive his Honda "U.S. Player of the Year" award, was nevertheless sharp early snagging a header by defender Marek Nikl in the fourth minute. However, there was nothing he could do in the 62nd minute when Nikl put away a rebound of a shot off the post.

Dortmund and G'ladbach are tied for sixth place at 5-4-6 with 21 points, followed by Hannover and 4-4-7, 19 points) which is tied for eighth with VfB Stuttgart (3-2-10).

In the 2Bundesliga, U.S. defender Gregg Berhalter and Energie Cottbus once led the league, but have fallen on hard times, not winning in November. In four matches, Cottbus drew twice 0-0, while losing to SC Freiburg 4-1 and Greuther Fürth 2-1.

In all but the Freiburg match, the defense, with Berhalter in the middle, had played well. Now December has gotten off in a similar way with a 1-1 with Dynamo Dresden yesterday with both goals coming in the first half in a rather dull match.

The draw left Cottbus (7-4-4, 25) in fifth place but only four points behind VfL Bochum in first in the tightly bunched top of the table.

In the Netherlands, U.S. mimdfielder DaMarcus Beasley remains sidelined with a groin strain while PSV Eindhoven dispatched NAC Breda 3- 0 to remain in first place. Beasley has resumed training and is considered day-to-day.
In Belgium, U.S. defender Oguchi Onyewu continued to sit out his red-card suspension as Standard de Liege, which was reduced to 10 men, drew 0-0 with Roulers.
