Americans Abroad Onyewu returns, Standard shuts out Anderlecht 2-0 for share of first place.By Robert Wagman (in Washington, D.C.)
(Wednesday, December 14, 2005) -- United States defender Oguchi Onyewu returned from his three-game suspension for two red cards to help Standard de Liege regain a share of first place by blanking Anderlecht 2-0 tonight in Belgium's Jupiler League. Aderlecht (10-2-5) and Standard (11-4-2) sit atop the standings with 35 points each. Standard used a first-half goal from Almani Da Silva Moreira and an own goal for the home victory. In the last game of Onyewu's suspension, he watched Standard drop a 2-1 decision to KAA Ghent (6-7-4, 22) Saturday. Standard defensive midfielder Matthieu Assou-Ekotto received a red card in the match which left him suspended for the critical match against Anderlecht. Standard coach Dominique D'Onofrio decided to keep Onyewu in the central defense tonight, marking Anderlecht's Belgian international striker Mbo Mpenza, instead of moving to Assou-Ekotto's spot.
"Danny is a class player with a first-class attitude," AaB director Lynge Jacobsen said. "He has all the potential to be a great success in the Danish League." Califf played one season with the San Jose Earthquakes after five years with the Los Angeles Galaxy. He was named to MLS's "Best XI" in 2005. Califf is expected to immediately enter the starting lineup in place of Canadian international Marco Reda whose contract just expired. Aalborg, located in northern Denmark, is 7-7-6 with 27 points, fifth among 12 teams midway through the 2005-06 season. The club, which participated in the 2004-05 UEFA Cup, is also competing in the Royal League, a competition for the top clubs in Scandinavia. Califf is competing for a spot on the U.S World Cup team. "I have had a wonderful six years in MLS, but this is a new chapter in my career," Califf said. "I am looking to go to Europe, make an impression, and enjoy what I expect to be a tremendous experience, both professionally and personally. American Kasey Keller played well in goal for visiting Borussia Monchengladbach which drew 1-1 at Hannover in the German Bundesliga Saturday. The game was witnessed by 33,000 fans that included U.S. Soccer Federation officials and manager Bruce Arena on their way home from the World Cup draw in Leipzig. Hannover's American defender Steve Cherundolo was in the stands with them, injured with a pulled thigh muscle. Keller was sharp early, as he was the previous weekend, stopping a 19th-minute drive from Vahid Hashemian. Hannover defender Michael Tarnat then beautifully fed Hanno Balitsch, who looked to have an easy goal, but was denied by Keller. There was little Keller could do in the 67th minute when unmarked Jiri Stajner headed home a well-placed cross. In the 2Bundesliga, U.S. defender Gregg Berhalter and Energie Cottbus, continued their downward spiral, losing 2-1 to Kickers Offenbach. Berhalter started, but came out in the 60th minute. Cottbus is winless (0-4-3) in its last seven and fell to 7-5-4 with 25 points, tied for sixth place, but still only five points off the league lead. In the Netherlands, PSV Eindhoven dropped into a three-way tie for first place Sunday after a 1-0 road loss to Feyenoord Rotterdam. U.S. midfielder DaMarcus Beasley has resumed training with Eindhoven, but remained sidelined with a groin strain he suffered in the U.S. 1-1 draw in Scotland almost a month ago. He could return this weekend. Eindhoven, AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord are all 11-2-2 with 35 points.
