Americans Abroad Convey, Hahnemann help Reading thrash Brighton 5-1.By Robert Wagman (in Washington, D.C.)
(Wednesday, December 14, 2005) -- United States goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann went 86 minutes before giving up a goal, but Reading had already secured a 5-1 thrashing of shorthanded Brighton Saturday in the second-division English League Championship at Madejski Stadium. U. S. midfielder Bobby Convey was active in the Reading attack and came close to scoring with a free kick in the 25th minute that was well-saved by keeper Alan Blayney. Reading led 4-0 when Brighton's Colin Kazim-Richards took advantage of a bad defensive error to fire in a 30-yard rocket. Brighton played a man down after Gary Elphick was ejected with his second yellow card in the 48th minute. Reading (17-1-5, 56 points) held on to its four-point lead over Sheffield United (16-3-4) at the midpoint of the season. U.S. midfielder Eddie Lewis went the distance for Leeds United which suffered an unusual home defeat 1-0 at the hands of Cardiff after Jason Koumas curled home a first-half free-kick for the only goal of the match. Leeds generated almost no offense on the day with Lewis' long shot that sailed just high in the 64th minute his side's best effort of the afternoon. American Frank Simek continues to work hard on the Sheffield Wednesday back-line, but the team went down to its fourth straight shutout setback 1-0 at Hull. Wednesday only conceded four goals in that span, going 0-3-1, but it sits in 21st place at 4-11-8 with 20 points, one point above the relegation zone and three points above the basement. American defender Jay DeMerit, after serving as a reserve in his last outing, played 90 strong minutes for Watford which earned a 1-1 draw when Marlon King scored in injury time. Watford (10-4-9, 39) is in third place. In the English Premier League, American Brad Friedel was in goal for Blackburn Rovers which hadn't scored in its last three league games, but edged West Ham United 3-2. Paul Dickov recorded a pair of second half goals and Shefki Kuqi netted the winner in the 76th minute. As good as Manchester City was a week earlier in its 5-2 win over Charlton Athletic in London, it was that poor on the road at West Bromwich Albion, losing 2-0. U.S. midfielder Claudio Reyna played 69 minutes for City, but could not help generate any offense in a physical match that saw his teammate Andy Cole sent off in the 87th minute. Charlton, meanwhile, bounced back from its loss to Manchester City (and six straight defeats) with a 2-0 defeat of Sunderland. U.S. defender Jonathan Spector did not dress for Charlton. Fulham was blanked for a second consecutive match, falling 1-0 to Birmingham City when Nicky Butt came up with an 84th-minute goal. American Carlos Bocanegra again had a good match on the Fulham back-line as he and U.S. striker Brian McBride both went the distance. McBride came close for Fulham in the 25th minute, but his sharp header went just over the crossbar. City (7-6-3, 24) stands ninth. Charlton (7-7-1, 22) is tied for 10th. Rovers (6-7-3, 21) are 12th. Fulham (4-8-4, 16) is tied for 16th among 20 teams
