Americans Abroad Keller, Gladbach waste two-goal lead, tie Hertha Berlin 2-2.(Monday, November 28, 2005) -- United States goalkeeper Kasey Keller and Borussia Monchengladbach saw a big win slip away yesterday. After taking a 2-0 halftime lead over Hertha Berlin, visiting G'ladbach surrendered a pair of goals in an eight-minute period midway through the second half and had to settle for a 2-2 draw in the German Bundesliga. G'ladbach went ahead early on a seventh-minute goal from Brazilian forward Carlos Kahe and added a second tally five minutes later on an own goal by Hertha defender Arne Friedrich. Keller's strong early play was not enough for G'ladbach. Hertha (6-4-4, 28 points) got a goal from Turkish international Yildiray Basturk in the 68th minute and another from Nico Kovac on an unmarked header in the 76th to draw level. Both teams failed to convert late chances. G'ladbach is tied with Borussia Dortmond for sixth place at 5-3-6 with 21 points. American Steve Cherundolo went the distance at right back and was effective in pushing the ball forward for Hannover 96 which had an easy time with last-place Kaiserslautern winning 5-1 in its best offensive show of the season. Hannover (3-4-7) is tied with Arminia Bielefeld (4-6-4) for 11th place with 16 points. In the third division, FC St. Pauli defeated Hamburger SV II 4-0 with Americans Benny Feilhaber (Hamburg) and Ian Joy (St. Pauli) going the distance. In the Netherlands, PSV Eindhoven had little trouble defeating ADO Den Haag 3-0. U.S. midfielder DaMarcus Beasley did not play for PSV, while John O'Brien sat for ADO, both sidelined with groin injuries. Eindhoven (10-1-2, 32) is in first place while ADO (2-8-3, 8) is 16th among 18 teams in the Eredivisie and in the relegation zone. Many matches in Europe were postponed because of a heavy snow fall on Saturday. One was Standard de Liege's showdown with Anderlecht in Belgium. U.S. defender Oguchi Onyewu would have had to sit out for Standard, serving part of his suspension for two red cards. Standard (10-3-1, 31) is in first place, two points ahead of Anderlecht (8-1-5) in the Jupiler League. Many MLS players are enjoying short training stays at various European clubs. One player who is actively looking for a job is 25-year old defender Danny Califf, who played this year for the San Jose Earthquakes in Major League Soccer. Califf is at AaB Aalborg of Denmark's Superliga, a club which has announced it will spend upwards of $1.5 million to acquire new players during the winter transfer window. AaB (6-7-6, 24) is struggling in sixth place in the 12-club league, but is still in contention for a spot in next season's UEFA Cup.
