Americans Abroad Keller, G'ladbach see winning streak end on own goal, tie Stuttgart 1-1.By Robert Wagman (in Washington, D.C.)
(Tuesday, October 18, 2005) -- United States goalkeeper Kasey Keller and his Borussia Monchengladbach teammates came within a minute of the club's longest winning streak in 10 years. Monchengladbach, seeking to win four in a row for the first time in a decade and its first victory at Stuttgart in 11 years, was guilty of an own goal in the 89th minute and had to settle for a 1-1 draw Saturday in the German Bundesliga. G'ladbach captain Jeff Strasser, while attempting a seemingly easy clearance, looped a ball back over Keller for the equalizer. Keller was not all that busy for the first 83 minutes. His best play came when he charged out on Tomas Gomez, who was coming in alone, and forced him to shoot inches wide in the 37th minute. In the 83rd minute, Keller made two difficult stops 35 seconds apart. First, he made a stunning reaction save on a point-blank shot from Cacau. Then, he stopped a blast from Danijel Ljuboja. However, in the end, Keller's frantic backpedaling and dive was not enough to reach Strasser's looping, curving error. G'ladbach is tied with VFL Wolfsburg for fifth place at 4-2-3 with 15 points. Embattled Hannover 96 coach Ewald Lienen's might keep his job for awhile longer after a 4-1 victory Sunday at FC Köln. U.S. defender Steve Cherundolo continues to nurse a sore knee and did not dress for Hannover (2-3-4, 10) which is 11th in the 18-team Bundesliga. In the 2Bundesliga, U.S. defender Gregg Berhalter and the Energie Cottbus defense had a good afternoon in blanking SpVgg Unterhaching 2-0. Berhalter was issued a yellow card. Cottbus (6-1-2, 19 points) is in first place with VfL Bochum (5-0-4), even on points, but well ahead on goal differential. In the Netherlands' Eredivisie, American DaMarcus Beasley went 90 minutes and recorded an assist for host PSV Eindhoven which defeated AZ Alkmaar 3-0 on a pair of goals by Phillip Cocu. Beasley, playing on the left side of a three-man front line, and Ivory Coast international Arouna Koné, ran at defenders the whole match and opened space for Cocu. Beasley assisted on PSV's final goal, delivering a great cross to Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink who was able to tap it home from close range. PSV (6-1-1, 19) is in second place, keeping pace, two points behind Feyenoord (7-1-0), but one ahead of AZ Alkmaar (6-2-0). PSV has a busy week with a Champions League match against Italian powerhouse AC Milan tomorrow and a meeting with rival Ajax Sunday. U.S. defender-midfielder John O'Brien is still nursing a groin strain and did not dress for ADO Den Haag which fell 3-1 to Vitesse Arnhem. ADO is 2-4-2 with eight points, in a three-way tie for 15th place. In Belgium's Jupiler League, U.S. defender Oguchi Onyewu was shown a red card for the second time in three matches, but short-handed Standard de Liege held on for a 1-0 decision over KRC Genk. Onyewu was ejected in the 20th minute for a dangerous tackle from behind after also receiving a red card in Standard's 2-2 draw with Beerschot September 25. Onyewu was waiting for a decision from the Jupiler disciplinary committee on his first red card, so now he faces what will clearly be a multi-match suspension.
