(Wednesday, February 1, 2006) -- On January 24, Feyenoord Rotterdam told United States defender Cory Gibbs his services were no longer needed. Today, the club loaned Gibbs to ADO Den Haag, its rival in the Dutch Eredivisie.

ADO is in desperate need of help, residing in the Eredivise relegation zone, sitting 16th in the 18-team league at 5-13-3 with 18 points. Sparta Rotterdam and NAC Breda are tied for 14th place at 5-11-5 with 20 points, just above the drop zone.

Having conceded 42 goals, third worst in the league, ADO also signed 23-year-old defender Angelo Martha.

ADO is the employer of oft-injured American defender-midfielder John O'Brien, who currently in California, rehabilitating a foot injury.

Gibbs, who has 16 caps with the U.S. men, hopes playing for ADO will enhance chances of playing with the Americans in the 2006 World Cup this summer.

Feyenoord sent Gibbs, 26, packing five days after he had returned from a long injury rehabilitation. He had spent the last six months in Florida rehabilitating a knee injury he suffered in the U.S. men's 2-1 loss to England in a May 28 friendly in Chicago. In June, Gibbs had surgery in June to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee.

Gibbs signed with Feyenoord in January 2005 with a contract that reportedly ran to the summer of 2009. He immediately became a starter under coach Ruud Gullit, who was fired after the 2004-05 season in which Gibbs one goal in 15 Eredivisie appearances

Gibbs never played for current coach Erwin Koeman who has Feyenoord battling for the Eredivisie title. The team is tied with AZ Alkmaar in second place at 15-3-3 with 48 points, trailing PSV Eindhoven (16-2-3) by three points.

A Feyenoord club official said Gibbs was no longer needed because depth had been created on the back-line during his absence. "He will leave because there are many players available in his position," Fred Blankemeijer told Associated Press.

Gibbs started his professional career with St. Pauli in Germany, which was in the Bundesliga when he signed, but was relegated twice in his two-and-one-half years with the club. He then spent the 2004 Major League Soccer season with FC Dallas.

Because the loan indicates Gibbs is still under contract, it raises the interesting possibility that he could return next season to Feyenoord should he do well with ADO or the World Cup.

In the Eredivivsie tonight, American DaMarcus Beasley went the distance on the left side of a three-man front for PSV Eindhoven which survived a late scare, but advanced to the semifinals of the Dutch Gatorade Cup with a 3-2 decision over host FC Groningen in frigid weather at Euroborg Stadium.

With Philip Cocu scoring twice, including on a bicycle kick to make it 3-0 after 27 minutes, PSV seemed to have things well in hand. But Groningen came back with tallies by Erik Nevland in the 55th minute and Mark Jan Fledderus in the 87th.
