Americans Abroad Keller is besieged in G'ladbach's 2-0 loss to Wolfsburg.By Robert Wagman (in Washington, D.C.)
(Sunday, February 5, 2006) - United States goalkeeper Kasey Keller was on the losing side for the second straight weekend as Borussia Mönchengladbach fell 2-0 at VfL Wolfsburg before 17,936 at Volkswagen Arena. Mönchengladbach has now lost both its German Bundesliga matches since the winter break. Keller had a frantic first half, called on to make saves on Kevin Hofland, Bojan Neziri, and two each on Diego Klimowicz and Mike Hanke. Klimowicz drilled a shot past Keller from eight yards in the 41st minute to put Wolfsburg ahead 1-0. In the 64th, Hanke was unmarked when he settled a headed cross and fired home a shot from the middle of the box for a 2-0 advantage. In the dying minutes, Keller twice denied Klimowicz. Mönchengladbach (6-6-7, 25 points) is tied for seventh place with Borussia Dortmund (6-6-7), but only three points below fifth with its attendant berth in the UEFA Cup next season. Last weekend, G'ladbach missed the chance to move into the top five, losing 3-1 at home to Bayern Munich. U.S. defender Steve Cherundolo sat out Hannover 96's 1-1 draw today with visiting 1. FC Nürnberg. Cherundolo clashed heads with Hertha Berlin's Gilberto in a 1-1 tie January 28, Gilberto, who suffered a severe concussion, had to be carried off the field on a stretcher. Cherundolo reportedly was also suffering the effects of the collision during the week, so he was kept on the sidelines as a precaution, listed as having a head bruise. Hannover (4-4-11, 23) is in ninth place in the bunched middle of the standings. In the 2Bundesliga, U.S. defender Gregg Berhalter went 90 minutes for Energie Cottbus in a drab 0-0 draw with SC Paderborn 07 today. Cottbus (8-6-5), Paderborn (8-7-5) and TSV 1860 München (8-6-5) are tied for sixth place with 29 points, but Paderborn has played an extra game. Despite receiving his third red card of the season in his last outing, U.S. defender Oguchi Onyewu was slated to start in Standard de Liege's match against his former team La Louviere in Belgium's Jupiler League until the match was postponed because of poor field conditions. Onyewu is allowed to play, pending appeal. Defender Cory Gibbs joined struggling ADO Den Haag in the Netherlands Eredivisie, but is still at least a couple of weeks away from game fitness. Gibbs has been rehabilitating his left knee in Florida since having surgery to repair a torn meniscus in June. After losing 3-0 to Heerenveen, ADO sits in the Eredivisie relegation zone with a 5-14-3 record and 18 points, three points from safety.
