Americans Abroad Caugherty to sign with Bodens BK in Sweden.
SoccerTimes (Tuesday, February 7, 2006) -- American midfielder Ryan Caugherty is prepared to sign today with Boden BK of Sweden's third-tier Division 1 Norra. "That's the plan," Caugherty confirmed during a phone interview. Caugherty, a Pittsburgh native, expects to be the central midfielder in Boden's 4-3-3 alignment. "It's a two-way position," he said. "I'm free to attack and to defend. It's what I feel is best at the time." Caugherty, 23, said he chose Bodens because he was impressed by the "professionalism" of the team. "I've had nothing but a positive vibe since I've been here," he said. "It was just the professionalism of the club. I just felt right. I felt I could learn a lot here." Caugherty spent the last six months with B1913, a club located in Odense, Denmark. Immediately after graduating from Wake Forest University in 2004, Caugherty played 13 games for B1913's arch-rival in Odense, B1909. While he was a fourth-round pick in the 2005 MLS supplemental draft by the Kansas City Wizards, Caugherty said he was intent on signing in Europe. "I was drafted by Kansas City and that was always an option, but I wanted to try overseas," said Caugherty, who was born in South Korea. "So far, it's been nothing but a positive experience. It's always been a dream of mine. "It was a window of opportunity in Europe so I can eventually play in one of the top leagues." The Allsvenskan is Sweden's top division, followed by the Superettan. Boden has previously signed several Americans, including MLS veterans in defender Brian Dunseth of Chivas USA, Colorado Rapids striker Luchi Gonzalez and midfielder Leighton O'Brien, who spent 2005 with Real Salt Lake. Before moving to Sweden, Caugherty had two trials with Viborg FF, which finished the 2005 season in third place the Superligaen, Denmark's top division. Caugherty will return to Denmark tomorrow to quickly move. In 74 games at Wake Forest, Caugherty scored four goals and added six assists. In the second-tier English League Championship yesterday, American defender Jay DeMerit went the distance for Watford which drubbed host Sheffield United 4-1. Watford (16-6-10, 58 points), tied with Leeds United (17-7-7) for third place, moved to within 11 points of Sheffield (21-5-6) for second place. The top two teams in the League Championship are promoted to the Premier League. The third- through sixth-place finishers enter a playoff for a third promotion spot. Reading (24-1-7, 79), which employs U.S. goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann and midfielder Bobby Convey is in first place by 10 points and riding a 31-match unbeaten streak (24-0-7), a England second-division record. U.S. midfielder Eddie Lewis plays for Leeds.
