Americans Abroad Cooper is released by Manchester United; Nguyen makes debut.
SoccerTimes (Monday, January 30, 2006) -- American striker Kenny Cooper has been released by Manchester United after two-and-a-half years with the English Premier League powerhouse. The club's web site said that the team's relationship with Cooper, 21, had been terminated "by mutual consent." Cooper reportedly was in the final year of the contract he signed in 2003. Cooper was the third player to be released during the January transfer window, following 23-year-old midfielder David Fox and 19-year-old Finnish forward Jami Puustinen. Fox signed on with Blackpool of the third-division English League One. Despite success with the reserves, Cooper never made an appearance with Man. U.'s first team. On December 28, reserve team manager Rene Meulensteen said the club was looking to loan Cooper elsewhere. He had previously been assigned on loan at the beginning of the 2004-05 season to Académica Coimbra of Portugal's first-division Liga BetandWin, a deal that was cut short because of his lack of playing time. After a brief return to United, he was loaned briefly to Oldham Athletic of England's League One in January 2005. Cooper scored 17 goals in 2003-04 for the United reserves where he was a teammate of United States defender Jonathan Spector. Spector, who has appeared three times for the U.S. men, including two starts and playing in two World Cup qualifiers, is currently on loan by Man. U. to Charlton Athletic in the EPL. He is in the mix to make the Americans' 23-man World Cup roster. Cooper was born in Baltimore where his father, Ken Cooper, was coach of the Baltimore Blast of the Major Indoor Soccer League. Kenny grew up in Dallas where was the city's high school "Player of the Year" at Jesuit College Preparatory School. He committed to play collegiately at Southern Methodist before opting to sign professionally with Man. U. instead. Ken, who started his playing career in his native England, was an all-star goalkeeper with the Dallas Tornado in the North American Soccer League from 1970-79. He went on to play in the MISL before coaching. Striker Lee Nguyen, who left Indiana University after freshman year to sign with PSV Eindhoven of the Dutch Eredivisie, made his debut with the club's youth team and was "outstanding," according to PSV's web site. Nguyen went 90 minutes for Young PSV which was eliminated from the Beloften Gatorade Cup quarterfinals 2-0 by AZ Alkmaar's youth.
