(Friday, March 10, 2006) -- United States striker Brian McBride signed a one-year contract extension today with Fulham of the English Premier League.

McBride, who was transferred to Fulham from Major League Soccer's Columbus Crew in January 2004, is now committed to play at Craven Cottage through the summer of 2007.

McBride, 33, leads Fulham with 10 goals this season, nine in the Premiership, tying him for 10th place, and one in Carling Cup action. In 50 career games in all competitions for the Cottagers, McBride has 24 goals.

"I am delighted that we have secured the services of Brian for a further season," Fulham manager Chris Coleman said at the team's training session today. "I cannot speak highly enough about the player who has probably been one of our most impressive and consistent this season. Brian is a consummate professional who always gives 100 percent whether it's on the training pitch or in a game, and it's a pleasure to have him in my squad."

After being secured from Columbus for a reported $1.5 million transfer fee, McBride scored the game-winner in his debut for the Cottagers, beating U.S. goalkeeper Kasey Keller for a 2-1 decision over Tottenham Hotspur January 31, 2004. Keller is now with Borussia Mönchengladbach in Germany's Bundesliga.

McBride has not appeared for the U.S. men this year, but he is considered sure to be on the American roster for his third World Cup this summer in Germany. In 2002, he started all five Cup games, registering two goals and an assist for the Americans who advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to Germany.

After recording the only U.S. goal in three first-round losses in the 1998 tournament in France, McBride is the only American to score in more than one World Cup. McBride's seven tallies in World Cup qualifying are second all-time only to Earnie Stewart's nine.

U.S. defender Gregg Berhalter's free kick led to the game's only goal, Francis Kioyo's winner in stoppage time that gave Energie Cottbus a 1-0 decision over host Eintracht Braunschweig in Germany's 2Bundesliga Wednesday night.

Berhalter, who returned to his central back position after sitting out a one-game suspension for yellow-card accumulation, lofted a ball into the penalty area where it bounced around until it reached Kioyo. From point-blank range, Kioyo made no mistake.

With the top three teams promoted to the first division, Cottbus sits in third place at 11-6-7 with 40 points, one more than Greuther Furth (11-6-6) and two more than Freiburg (11-7-5), both of whom own a game in hand.

Cottbus is 3-0-3 in its last six outings. With 10 matches remaining, it trails first-place Bochum (13-4-7) by six points and Aachen (14-6-3) by five. Aachen holds a game in hand.

In the Belgian Cup quarterfinals, U.S. defender Oguchi Onyewu set up one goal and generally stood out during a 90-minute performance for Standard de Liege which downed AA Gent 4-2.

Onyewu, who narrowly missed scoring himself in the opening 10 minutes, also shot wide with a header late in the game

U.S. midfielder DaMarcus Beasley played most of the second half for PSV Eindhoven, the league leader in the Dutch Eredivisie, which was unceremoniously dumped 4-0 Wednesday from the European Champions League by host Lyon, the first-place team from France's Ligue 1.

With a 1-0 victory two weeks earlier at Eindhoven, Lyon easily advanced to the quarterfinals 5-0 on aggregate.

Beasley replaced Jefferson Farfan on the left flank in the 58th minute.
