(Tuesday, November 1, 2011) -- United States midfielder Clint Dempsey scored the opening goal in Fulham's 2-0 victory over host Wigan Saturday and in the process of netting his 36th, tied Brian McBride for the most career goals by an American in English Premier League matches.
In the meantime, U.S midfielder Sacha Kljestan recorded a goal and an assist for Anderlecht of Belgium's Pro League, leading a 4-0 triumph over visiting Lierse. The goal was his first in league play and he now has three in all competitions. Most importantly, he has helped Anderlecht into first place while securing a spot in the starting side.
Twelve matches into the season, Anderlecht (9-1-2, 29 points) has a six-point lead over Cercle Brugge (6-1-5) and Gent (7-3-2).
For Fulham, striker Bobby Zamora brought the ball quickly down the left wing in the 42nd minute. Dempsey began a hard run down the middle, outpacing two defenders and redirecting Zamora's cross into the net off the arm of Wigan goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi.
"I'm happy we got the points today and I'm sure people back home in the States like to see me doing well," Dempsey told the assembled media. "The funny thing is we've played some good football in the last few weeks and not got the results, whereas today we may not have played our best, but we got the points. It's crazy how it works sometimes."
There are some rumors that when the winter transfer window opens in January, Dempsey might be the target of some of the big European clubs in need of scoring. Given Fulham's situation, it might be hard pressed to turn down lucrative offer. If that is the case, Dempsey has nine or 10 matches remaining to capture the Premier League goal-scoring record.
