Dempsey again daunted by American keeper while Fulham falls to Hotspur.

(Thursday, November 10, 2011) -- United States midfielder Clint Dempsey seems to have more than his share of difficulty when he comes up against American goalkeepers.
Three weeks ago, when his Fulham squared off against Everton, it was Tim Howard who stifled Dempsey with a pair of fine saves as visiting Everton came away with a 3-1 victory. This past weekend, it was the ageless Brad Friedel who stopped 13 Fulham shots for Tottenham Hotspur, which defeated Fulham by that same 3-1 score.
Just as Howard had done, twice Friedel stopped Dempsey, and in doing so, kept him from the goal that will set a new American career goal-scoring record in England's Premier League. Currently, Dempsey is tied with Brian McBride as Americans who recorded 38 tallies in the EPL.
U.S. striker Jozy Altidore has been playing at a high level in Europe for years but, on Saturday, he celebrated only his 22nd birthday. He did so by scoring his first league goal in more than a month for AZ Alkmaar defeated Den Haag 3-0 in the Dutch Eredivisie.
Altidore's goal was the result of pace. He took a return pass and rounded the keeper, shooting into an open net for his fourth Eredivisie goal and his eight overall for AZ. He came out five minutes from the end.
In another notable performance this past weekend, Michael Bradley had a fine defensive game as his Chievo Verona got back on a winning track by shutting out Fiorentina 1-0 on Sunday.
Seventeen-year-old Californian midfielder Marc Pelosi has signed a deal with Liverpool and joined the EPL club's academy program. Pelosi scored eight goals in 28 appearances with the U.S. under-17 men and captained the team last summer in the world championships in Mexico.
A surprise call-up to the U.S. under-23 men, which serves as the Summer Olympics squad, is Stuttgart Kickers defender Royal Dominique Fennell. The German-American's team plays in the German third-division Oberliga Baden-Württemberg.
