Copa America Group C

Colombia triumphs 3-0 over Argentina, which misses three penalties.

LUQUE, Paraguay (Sunday, July 4, 1999) -- Colombia received unexpected help in beating Argentina 3-0 in Copa America today.

Argentina’s Martin Palermo missed three penalty shots for Argentina.

The victory allowed Colombia to advance to the quarterfinals. Argentina will play Uruguay in Group C Wednesday with the final quarterfinal spot on the line.

Uruguay got two goals from 20-year-old Marcelo Zalayeta in a two-minute span to edge Ecuador 2-1.

While Argentina came up empty on its penalties, Colombia scored twice from the penalty spot when Ivan Cordoba gave Colombia a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute and reserve Edwin Congo later added a second soon after entering.

Sixteen-year-old Jhonnier Montano netted the final Colombian goal with a dipping shot from outside the penalty area.

Palermo, a prolific striker for Boca Juniors striker, had been called up when Gabriel Batistuta and Hernan Crespo asked to be rested after a tough season in Europe.

On Thursday, he scored twice in a 3-1 victory over Ecuador.

Colombia (2-0, 6 points) joins Peru and Brazil already in the quarterfinals.
