United States will know its opponents after Saturday games.
(Saturday, April 8, 2000) – The United States will know tonight which nation will join Canada as its first-round opponents in the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament April 21-30 in Hershey, Pa.
Group B first-round qualifying concludes tonight with two matches at Estadio Tres de Marzo in Guadalajara, Mexico. Mexico and Costa Rica are tied for the group lead at 1-0-1 with four points each. Honduras (0-0-2) has two points (two draws), while Jamaica has no points and was eliminated from contention after being hammered 5-0 by Mexico on Thursday
Tonight, Mexico plays Costa Rica and Honduras faces Jamaica. The team that finishes second in Group B will be the Americans’ second opponent in Hershey, joining Canada., the Group A winner. Guatemala has also advanced to the final six, but will not face the U.S. in group play.
The U.S. automatically advanced to the final six-nation round of qualifying as the host country. It will be seeded as the runnerup from Group C.
In Thursday action in Guadalajara, Costa Rica tied Honduras 1-1. Costa Rica opened the scoring early with a goal in the seventh minute when Jonathan Bolaños sent a centering pass to Steven Bryce, whose hard shot found the net.
Honduras achieved the tie with a penalty kick converted by Julio César León in the first minute of the second half.
The Salvadoran referee, Rodolfo Sibrián, called Costa Rican defender Pablo Chinchilla for handling the ball in the box.
Near the end of the match, Costa Rica's Minor Diaz was sent off for violent conduct in the wall as Honduras prepared to take a free kick. Just a minute before, Honduras' Mario Chirinos was shown red for a second yellow card.
In the second match, Mexico eliminated Jamaica with forward Juan Pablo Rodríguez scoring four goals, two on penalty kicks. Captain Rafael Márquez added the fifth.
