D.C. United, Columbus Crew open quarterfinal series with road contests.

(Tuesday, April 3, 2001) -- Major League Soccer’s D.C. United and Columbus Crew open with the first leg of their CONCACAF Giants Cup quarterfinal series tomorrow with matches in Kingston, Jamaica and San Jose, Costa Rica.

D.C. United, winner of the 1998 CONCACAF Champions Cup, travels to Kingston to face Arnett Gardens FC in Kingston in the first leg of its quarterfinal matchup before hosting the return engagement in Washington one week later.

CD Saprissa of Costa Rica, which eliminated Alianza FC in its preliminary-round series, hosts the Crew at Estadio Saprissa in the opener of the other quarterfinal. The return match of will be held a week later in Columbus.

The other two quarterfinal pairings will be decided when the respective clubs reach an accord on dates, sites and kickoff times.

The winner of the Giants Cup advances in CONCACAF’s new system, culminating with its Champions Cup, to determine its representaive(s) to the World Club Championship.
