Glinton's pair leads Los Angeles to opening 5-0 rout of Lyn Oslo.

CARTAGENA, Spain (Tuesday, February 18, 2003) -- Midfielder Gavin Glinton scored twice and added an assist, helping the Los Angeles Galaxy to a resounding 5-0 victory over Lyn Oslo F.C. of Norway's first division this afternoon in Group B action of the La Manga Cup 2003.

Major League Soccer's Galaxy faces Torpedo Moscow (Russia) Friday and Odd Grenland (Norway) Monday to complete group play in the eight-club tournament.

"I'm pleased with our first game, especially with the performances of Myung Bo and Alex Pineda Chacón, our new players," Los Angeles coach Sigi Schmid said.

San Jose faces Rubin Kazan of Russia Thursday and Viking Stavangar Monday to complete Group A play after falling 2-0 to Norwegian perennial power Rosenborg yesterday..

Striker Chris Albright, defender Alexi Lalas and midfielder Sasha Victorine each contributed a goal for the Galaxy today while midfielder Simon Elliott recorded three assists.

"I think that Rosenborg is the tournament favorite," Schmid said.

Glinton scored his first goal in the sixth minute, finishing a nice service from Elliott. Glinton collected the 35-yard pass at the top of the box and beat one defender before finishing with right-foot blast past the right hand of Lyn goalkeeper Thomas Andre Odegard.

Ten minutes later, Victorine head home a Glinton cross to make it 2-0.

In the 49th minute, Elliott sent a corner kick from the right flank for Lalas who nailed a right-footer from 12 yards for a 3-0 advantage.

Four minutes later, Albright took a pass Elliott 30 yards out and sent a right-footed chip over Odegard's head to increase the margin to 4-0.

"Simon played a good ball to me," Albright said. "I thought that he would play it for the left side, but instead, he swung it to the right. I saw the goalie was one or two steps out and, since I didn't have many options, I just chipped him."

Glinton's second tally came in the 88th off a pass from Elliott. "It's always nice to score and I'm happy for my two goals, but I don't think that I had my best performance today," Glinton said. "I'm sure that I can improve."

In defeating the Earthquakes, Frode Johnsen and Harald Brattbakk scored the goals for Rosenborg, which has won 11 straight Norwegian League championships and competed for eight consecutive years in the European Champions League.

In the 36th minute, with the game scoreless, San Jose forward Brian Mullan stripped a Rosenborg defender and crossed the ball to midfielder Brian Ching who headed a shot off the far post. Ching collected the rebound and dropped it to striker Landon Donovan who fired a low shot that was cleared by a defender off the goal line.

Midfielder Ronnie Ekelund joins the Earthquakes tomorrow after having his visa approved yesterday in Denmark. Ekelund re-signed with the Quakes on January 27, but had to return to his native country to obtain his visa before heading to Spain.
