Colorado bounced out of CONCACAF Cup by Leon.LEON, MEXICO (Wednesday, July 15, 1998) -- Leon of Mexico’s First Division eliminated Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids from the CONCACAF Champions Cup with a 4-2 victory tonight.Leon advanced to the quarterfinals on aggregate 4-2 after Colorado’s 1-0 home victory June 28 in the first leg. Had the teams drawn 4-4 on aggregate, Colorado would have advanced to the quarterfinals of the regional club championship tournament because it would have scored more goals on the road. "We have nobody to blame but ourselves for letting in four goals tonight," said Colorado coach Glenn Myernick. "It is disappointing to get knocked out like this, giving away so many goals, and then fighting back and showing the heart we did." Leon next faces Luis Angel Firpo of El Salvador August 11 at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C., where the remainder of the tournament will be played. Leon jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half, before a Steve Trittschuh’s 45th minute goals narrowed Colorado’s deficit to 3-1 at intermission. Leon extended the lead to 4-1 early in the half, before Rapids midfielder Chris Henderson was ejected after receiving his second yellow card. Despite playing a man short, Colorado’s Paul Bravo scored in the 69th, but the Rapids could get no closer than 4-1. "I am very happy with our effort to play as we did with only ten men," Myernick said. "We fought and did not give up and many teams would have given up in that situation. I was incredibly disappointed in the red card, for him to lose his temper like that directly in the face of the referee. You can not show up a referee and the sending off was just." The CONCACAF Champions Cup tournament features the top clubs in North America, Central America and the Caribbean. The Rapids, along with MLS Cup '97 champion (Washington) D.C. United, qualified for the tournament based on reaching the MLS title game in 1997. |
