Major League Soccer Three trades are triggered hours before the league deadline.(Friday, August 13, 1999) -- Three deals were announced by Major League Soccer just before tonight’s midnight trading deadline. The Dallas Burn sent defensive midfielder Leonel Alvarez and future considerations to the New England Revolution for Ecuadorian striker Ariel Graziani. The Revolution also acquired midfielder Jeff Baicher from the San Jose Clash for midfielder Jair. The Los Angeles Galaxy re-acquired midfielder Jorge Salcedo from the Tampa Bay Mutiny in exchange for midfielder Daniel Hernandez. Graziani, who was allocated to New England on June 26 of this year, has started in three games for the Revolution this season. The 28-year-old has 12 goals in 21 appearances for the Ecuadorian national team. Alvarez played in 21 games -- starting 20 -- for the Burn in 1999, recording six assists. Since 1996, Alvarez has played in 70 regular season games for the Burn, and was voted the Burn's most valuable player in 1996. The two-time MLS All-Star was a mainstay of the Colombia national team during the 1990s, he has appeared 85 times for his nation. Baicher is the second leading scorer for the Clash this year with three goals and nine assists, having started in 20 games. "Today we have added a great defensive midfielder and a great attacking midfielder," Revolution coach Walter Zenga said. "Leonel is one of the best defensive midfielders in MLS, and gives us fight and determination. Jeff is a dangerous player who works very hard to win the ball to set up his teammates. I feel we have given ourselves a chance to do great things for the rest of the season." Jair started 16 games for the Revolution this year, recording one goal and one assist. "I saw Jair on a daily basis last season, and this is a tremendous acquisition for us. He's a very promising player," said Clash director of soccer Renato Capobianco, formerly an assistant coach with the Revolution. "He's an attack-minded midfielder, a player who can create for both himself and others, and he will be a great weapon, especially in the offensive third of the field." "As everyone knows, we've been searching for a providing-type midfielder, someone who can manufacture scoring chances for the offense, and Jair has an opportunity to become that player," added Clash coach Brian Quinn. Salcedo, 26, has appeared in 16 games for the Mutiny this season, managing one assist. Acquired by the Mutiny from the Chicago Fire on June 29, 1998, he appeared in 15 games for Tampa Bay last season, recording one goal and five assists. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound midfielder is a veteran of four MLS seasons, appearing in 99 league matches for the Galaxy (1996), Columbus Crew (1997), Fire (1998) and Mutiny (1998-99). "We are excited to have Jorge back in Los Angeles," said Galaxy coach Sigi Schmid. "He is a good passer of the ball, giving us someone who can play in a deeper part of midfield. Also, he is a versatile player who can play sweeper if we need it . . . We are sad to lose a player of Daniel's quality, but to receive a player of quality, you have to sometimes give up a player of quality." Hernandez appeared in 12 games for the Galaxy this season, going scoreless in 853 minutes. The 24-year old played in 17 games during his rookie season in 1998 with one assist. |
