Gutierez, Razov first half strikes allow Chicago to withstand Kansas City 2-1.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Thursday, August 5, 1999) -- The Chicago Fire received from Diego Gutierrez and Ante Razov in a five-minute span late in the first half, then withstood a second-half rally by the Kansas City Wizards for a 2-1 victory tonight before an anemic Major League Soccer crowd of 5,072 at Arrowhead Stadium.
Chicago (11-9, 31 points) snapped a two-game losing streak and climbed into a second-place tie with the Dallas Burn in the Western Conference standings. Kansas City (6-15, 14 points) remained in the Western basement.
For the sixth consecutive match, the Wizards conceded the first goal. Gutierrez, a product of Kansas City's Rockhurst College, netted his third goal of the season in the 38th minute, assisted by Lubos Kubik and new acquisition Sam George.
Just five minutes later, Razovís header made it 2-0. Jerzy Pobrodzny fed fellow Polish national team veteran Roman Kosecki on the left side of the penalty area, where Kosecki lofted a cross to Razov at the far post.
Kansas City. Thwarted by the crossbar in the first half, closed the gap to 2-1 in the 62nd minute when Mo Johnston redirected a Brian Johnson bullet from long range to slide the ball past goalkeeper Zach Thornton.
