Lassiter, Williams rally Miami to 2-1 upset in Kansas City.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Friday, August 18, 2000) -- Striker Roy Lassiter tied the game with a penalty kicks and then assisted Andy Williams’ game-winner as Miami rallied from a one-goal deficit in the second half and surprise the Kansas City Wizards 2-1 before 8,485 at Arrowhead Stadium tonight.

With the upset, the Fusion (10-12-5, 35 points), having won three of its last four, moved to within one point of the eighth and final Major League Soccer playoff berth.

In the 79th minute, Lassiter took a feed from Martin Machon into the box with 11 minutes left in the game, spun on a defender and quickly fed Williams who had his back to goal. Williams turned an placed his fourth goal into the left side of the net past Kansas City goalkeeper Tony Meola to make it 2-1.

Twelve minutes earlier, Lassiter converted his penalty kick for his seventh goal of the season to pull even at 1-1 after he was hauled down in the box by Kansas City defender Peter Vermes.

The Wizards (14-7-6, 48 points) got on the board first when Francisco Gomez notched his second goal in as many games in the 33rd minute. Preki danced through three Fusion defenders outside the box and found an unmarked Gomez on the left side. Gomez blasted a shot past Miami goalkeeper Nick Rimando to put Kansas City up 1-0.

Rimando made nine saves to help Miami prevail.
