Weltonís golden goal propels Miami over D.C. United 1-0.
FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Wednesday, May 10, 2000) -- Weltonís goal near the end of sudden death -- his first tally of the season -- gave the Miami Fusion a 1-0 decision over D.C.. United and Ray Hudson a victory in his debut as a Major League Soccer head coach.
Before 5,058 at Lockhart Stadium tonight, goalkeeper Nick Rimando earned a shutout in his first MLS start.
The goal came in the 98th minute of play off a long give-and-go play between Welton and forward Roy Lassiter. Welston passed the ball off to Lassiter from just outside the center circle, and Lassiter found a streaking Welton with a well-placed pass. From the edge of the six-yard box, Welton placed the ball low into the far corner for the game-winner.
Key injuries struck both Miami (2-3-4, 10 points) and United (2-6-1, 7 points), with the Fusionís Tyrone Marshall and Unitedís Marco Etcheverry leaving the game before the start of the second half because of strained hamstrings. Marshall left the field early in the first half and was replaced with Martin Machon in the midfield. D.C. United's Antonio Otero took the field after the break.
Miami was without the services of team captain Francis Okaroh, the defender sitting out with a strained groin.
Rimando turned away five shots.
