BOSTON (Wednesday, December 31, 2003) -- Former New England Revolution general manager Todd Smith died today of complications from leukemia at Brigham and Women's Hospital

Smith had battled leukemia since being diagnosed in March 2002. He was 38.

Smith was general manager of the Revolution during the 2001 and 2002 Major League Soccer seasons. In 2001, the Revolution played in the final of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and, in 2002, New England culminated with the team playing in the MLS Cup championship game. The Revs lost both finals.

During Smith's tenure, the Revolution moved from old Foxboro Stadium to the adjacent Gillette Stadium in Foxborough.

Before joining the Revolution, Smith was the general manager of the Hershey Wildcats of the A-League for four years. Under his leadership, the Wildcats won two Atlantic Division titles (1997, 1999) and a Northern Conference crown (2000). Smith was named the A-League's "Executive of the Year" in 1997.

Most recently, Smith worked as the soccer development director for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. In October, Smith produced the soccer clinic video "Soccer Kicks Cancer" featuring former U.S. national-team stars John Harkes and Tab Ramos as well as professional and college soccer coaches from MLS and New England. Proceeds from the video benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Smith was a stalwart player for the Harrisburg Heat of the Major Indoor Soccer League and the National Professional Soccer League and is in the Harrisburg Heat Hall of Fame. Smith was also a standout athlete at University of Pittsburgh and Mechanicsburg (Pa.) High School. A long-time resident of central Pennsylvania, he also owned and managed a construction company in the Harrisburg area.

Smith is survived by his son, Drake; mother, Priscilla; sister Debbie Voight, brother-in-law Rick Voight, and fiancée Lynne Meterparel, the one-time general manager of MLS's San Jose Clash (now the Earthquakes)..

Services will be held Saturday at Murray Unitarian Church in Attleboro, Mass. Smith's family asked that donations be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in White Plains, N.Y. in lieu of sending flowers.
