NCAA men Another Grabavoy game-winner leads Indiana over Butler 2-0; Stanford needs overtime to edge San Jose State 2-1.INDIANAPOLIS (Thursday, October 3, 2002) -- Midfielder Ned Grabavoy scored midway through the first half while striker Pat Noonan added a tally after intermission, powering No. 4 Indiana to a 2-0 non-conference decision over Butler before 3,389 at Kuntz Stadium tonight. "It was our best performance yet," Indiana coach Jerry Yeagley said. "It was clinical at some times in the first half. I don't think that the score told the tale. Our performance was very pleasing tonight. The bottom line is that that is what we have to have in the long haul." Four minutes after Butler senior midfielder Michael Mariscalco's bicycle shot from in the box sailed high, Indiana (7-1-2) took a 1-0 lead, thanks to an individual effort by Grabavoy. The crafty sophomore carried down the right side, into the penalty area, shaking four defenders before he knocked a shot into the far right side of the net from six yards out with 31:19 elapsed. For Grabavoy, a member of the United States under-20 national team who leads IU with six assists, it was his second goal of the season and second game-winner in as many games after beating Penn State 1-0 with a penalty kick on September 27. The Hoosiers were able to expand their lead to 2-0 in the 74th minute. Senior midfielder Ryan Mack started the play, serving a ball from just past midfield to freshman attacker Brian Plotkin on the right side. Plotkin centered into the box to Noonan who put away his shot from eight yards for his sixth goal of the season. Indiana won for the sixth straight time with goalkeeper Jay Nolly recording five shutouts in that stretch. Sophomore Michael Bowditch made his first career start as sweeper with Phil Presser suspended for receiving a red card at Penn State. "Jay was strong in goal," Yeagley said. "In some dangerous situations he did a nice job. Michael Bowditch played all 90 minutes for us and did a fine job at sweeper." Keeper Grant Barrie made 10 saves for the Bulldogs (3-7-1) with IU holding a 20-7 shots advantage. [2] Stanford 2, San Jose State 1 (OT) STANFORD, Calif. -- Sophomore attacker Darren Fernandez scored in a second period of sudden death, lifting second-ranked Stanford past San Jose State 2-1 before 545 who watched noon-conference action at Harry Maloney Field. Junior defender Todd Dunivant started the sequence with a cross to senior striker Roger Levesque who touched to found Maliza.
