Fernandez header in overtime sends No. 1 Stanford past Oregon State 1-0; SMU, Bradley tie 1-1.

STANFORD, Calif. (Sunday, October 13, 2002) -- Sophomore attacker Darren Fernandez scored midway through a first sudden-death overtime period, lifting No. 1 Stanford to a 1-0 victory over Oregon State in a Pac-10 match before 593 at Harry Maloney Field this afternoon.

Senior midfielder Johanes Maliza started the winning sequence with a free kick he sent to Fernandez who fired his header over several Oregon State defenders and past Beavers goalkeeper Peter Billmeyer.

Both teams had chances in regulation, including a rocket shot on goal by Fernandez, though neither team produced an abundance of opportunities and the Cardinal, for the most part, smothered OSU(9-3, 0-2). Stanford (11-1, 2-0) held a 10-4 advantage in shots, 7-1 on frame.

The Cardinal recorded its eighth shutout of the season with goalkeeper Robby Fulton producing his fifth shutout in six starts.

There were 53 fouls called in the match, 32 against the Beavers who were issued four yellow card to three to Stanford.

"I'm excited and proud for the team. We were shorthanded in two physical games, but the guys worked hard this weekend." said Cardinal coach Brett Simon alluding to Friday's 3-0 decision over Washington.

Senior striker Roger Levesque and junior defender Todd Dunivant each missed their second straight game. Levesque, an All-American who has five goals and leads Stanford with 12 assists and 22 points, has a knee injury, while Dunivant, a three-year starter, has been bothered by a leg ailment.

Stanford has posted a 49-4-4 record at Maloney Field since 1997.

[6] Southern Methodist 1, [12] Bradley 1

MORTON, Ill. - A battle of the Missouri Valley Conference's top two teams settled nothing.

Before 973 fans at Bradley's McClallen Park, No. 6 Southern Methodist and 12th-ranked Bradley traded goals within an 18-second span in the second half. SMU (10-1-2, 3-0-1) saw an end to streaks of nine straight wins, 14 in a row in conference play. Bradley (11-0-3, 3-0-1) remained undefeated.

Bradley took a short-lived 1-0 lead with 53:27 elapsed when freshman striker Chris Brown made a tenacious run down the right wing and fought through a defender to save the ball from going over the end line. Brown the stepped inside the defender and centered to sophomore forward Preston Good who chipped a shot over Mustang sophomore goalkeeper T.J. Tomasso at the near post for his fifth goal.

Immediately from the restart, SMU sophomore defender Ugo Ihemelu raced down the right side and fed sophomore forward Ryan Lathum just outside the penalty area. While falling, Lathum slid a shot under Bradley freshman keeper Chris Dunsheath to the far post for the 1-1 tie. Bradley finished with a 22-20 edge in shots, but neither side's marksmanship was impressive with SMU holding a 7-5 edge in shots on goal.
