NCAA men Goldthwaite's first goal gives Irish 1-0 overtime victory over Indiana.SOUTH BEND, Ind. (Thursday, September 18, 2003) -- Defender Kevin Goldthwaite scored in a second sudden-death overtime period, sending No. 16 Notre Dame to a 1-0 decision over 18th-ranked Indiana before 2,131 who witnessed the non-conference match last night at Alumni Field. In the second of two possible 10-minute overtime periods, reserve freshman attacker Nate Norman intercepted a lazy Indiana pass and darted through three defenders with teammates Justin Detter and Devon Prescod on his flanks. Indiana midfielder Danny O'Rourke dragged Norman down five yards above the top of the penalty area, earning a yellow card. Irish midfielder, considered a set-piece specialist, tried to bend the free kick to the left of the Hoosiers' defensive wall with Goldtwhaite diving in to head the ball back into the right corner. Indiana goalkeeper Jay Nolly, moving to his right, could not change direction and the Irish (3-1-2), with Goldthwaite's first goal of 2003, had the 1-0 triumph with only their second shot on goal after 1:07:12 of play. Indiana (2-3-2) held a 12-9 advantage in shots, but there was a dearth of dangerous situations created by either side. Indiana put only four shots on frame to Notre Dame's two. "We'll see what kind of character this team has," IU coach Jerry Yeagley said. "We've got to find a way to get wins. I am disappointed with our record and I feel like we should be 6-0-1 right now." The Irish partially avenged a loss to Indiana in the second round of last year's NCAA tournament. [5] Southern Methodist 2, Denver 0 [24 Tulsa 2, Stanford 0 TULSA, Okla. -- No. 5 Southern Methodist used goals by midfielder J.D. Johnson and striker Adam Robertson while recording its third straight shutout in downing Denver 2-0 in the Golden Hurricane Classic at Hurricane Soccer & Track Stadium. Johnston put away a feed from midfielder Kellan Zindell to give SMU (5-1) a 1-0 lead with 18:53 elapsed. Robertson scored off a header with 58 seconds remaining to make it 2-0. Denver fell to 3-4-1. Forwards Kyle Brown and Ryan Pore found net to give Tulsa (6-1) a 2-0 triumph over Stanford (1-4). A year ago at Stanford, Tulsa shocked the top-ranked and previously undefeated Cardinal 3-1 behind two goals from Pore and one from Brown. Tonight, TU defender Scott Kincaid played a ball from the back up the left side to Brown who carried up the sideline and into the left side of the penalty area, Stanford goalkeeper Andrew Kartunen moved out to challenge, but Brown quickly crossed to Pore who converted with a three-yard blast into the vacated net for a 1-0 lead with 35:07 gone. Tulsa went ahead 2-0 with 56:01 elapsed when Brown took a pass from Pore and nailed a 10-yard shot from the middle of the box. |
