NCAA men ACC dominates top seeds in national tournament field.INDIANAPOLIS (Monday, November 15, 2004) -- The Atlantic Coast Conference grabbed three of the four top seeds of the 2004 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Tournament which had its 48-school field announced today. The 16 seeded teams receive first-round byes in the event that culminates with the Men's College Cup at Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. Sixth-seeded UCLA will serve as the host of the event which will stage semifinals on December 10 with the championship match December 12. Wake Forest was given the top seed by the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Committee despite the Deamon Deacons losing to Virginia 2-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament semifinals. Defending national champion Indiana, which defeated St. John's 2-1 in the 2003 final, is the No. 2 seed, followed by Maryland which fell 2-1 to Virginia in the ACC tournament final. Virginia is the fourth seed. The remaining seeds are (5) Notre Dame (6) UCLA (7) Southern Methodist (8) Notrh Carolina-Greensboro (9) California-Santa Barbara (10) Penn State (11) St. John's (12) Old Dominion (13) New Mexico (14) Creighton (15) Boston College and (16) Virginia Commonwealth. The Big Ten led all conferences with six teams in the field while the ACC and Big East each had five representatives. All first-round games will be played either Friday or Saturday, while all second-round contests will be played November 23. Twenty-three conferences were awarded automatic bids for the 2004 tournament. The remaining 25 teams were selected at-large. The automatic qualifying conferences and their representatives are:
