QUEENS, N.Y. (Monday, September 6, 2004) -- Senior midfielder Andre Schmid's late goal gave No. 2 St. John's a 1-0 triumph over 10th-ranked Washington before 1,095 at Belson Stadium.

St. John's (2-0) finally broke through in the 79th minute. Senior midfielder Matt Groenwald's shot from the top of the penalty area deflected to into the box for Schmid to nail home from 12 yards out past junior goalkeeper Chris Eylander and into the lower left side of the net.

St. John's controlled play though much of the first half despite the Huskies (2-1) getting the first shot attempt, with a poke from senior striker Brett Wiesner going wide in the fourth minute. From that point, however, St. John's had the better chances with Groenwald and freshman defender Andrei Gotsmanov coming up empty on opportunities.

St. John's had a pair of chances in the waning moments of regulation. Groenwald's blast went just wide while junior midfielder Jeff Carroll was the recipient of a long free kick, but his header was cleared by Washington defender Mike Chabala.

Senior keeper Bill Gaudette posted his second consecutive shutout to open the season, making two saves. The Red Storm outshot the Huskies 13-5.

Eylander made four saves, but conceded his first goal in three outings this season.

St. John's has a stiff challenge on the horizon with a Friday visit to No. 5 Maryland.

Portland 1, Alabama-Birmingham 0
Gonzaga 3, Sacramento State 1

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Second-half substitute Matthew Dallman scored the game-winner in the 84th minute, lifting Portland to a 1-0 victory over Alabama-Birmingham to capture the title of its Nike Portland Invitational at Merlo Field.

Portland (2-0), which blanked Sacramento State 4-0 Saturday behind a goal and assist from junior midfielder Miguel Guante, was the only team to win both games here. Earlier today, Gonzaga (1-2) recorded a 3-1 decision over Sacramento State (0-3) behind senior striker Arni Inge Pjetursson's two goals.

Dallman, a redshirt freshman, came on in the 57th minute with instructions to push forward into the attack from his midfield position. In the 84th minute, Dallman took a pass from junior defender Brian Cotlove in the Pilots' offensive half . He worked a give-and-go with Guante, settled the return pass above the top right corner of the penalty area and then blasted a 25-yard strike inside the far post.

"Miguel teed it up perfectly and I saw a clearing in the defense," Dallman said. "As soon as it left my foot, I knew it was going in."

It was the only shot of the weekend that UAB keeper A.J. Robles did not stop. Robles made 12 saves to preserve UAB's 1-0 shutout of Gonzaga Saturday.

Portland held a 23-5 shots advantage over UAB (1-1), 14-1 in the first half. Junior midfielder Sean Babcock came close for the Pilots when he shot off the crossbar in the 24th minute. Robles made another 12 saves for the Blazers today.

"We created many scoring chances throughout and I knew it was just a matter of time before one found the net," UP coach Bill Irwin said. "We had two good performances this weekend, today against a very good UAB team. It's a good stepping stone before we hit the road this coming weekend."

George Washington 5, Howard 0

WASHINGTON, D.C -- Sophomore attacker Sal Caccavale buried a direct kick five minutes into the first sudden-death overtime period to lift host American to a 2-1 victory over Georgetown to win the D.C. College Cup at Reeves Field.

AU (2-1) was the only team to win both games in the annual tournament that includes Washington's four Division I universities. Earlier today, George Washington (1-1) blanked Howard 5-0, dropping the Bison to 0-2.
