NCAA men William & Mary stuns No. 1 Maryland 1-0 on Thomas overtime tally.
W&M, which raised its record to 4-1-1, stifled NCAA Division I's most potent attack. Maryland (5-1-1) entered the game having scored 30 goals in its first six outings, its average of 5.0 per game a full goal more than any other school. Each school has won three times in six meetings in the series. Tribe sophomore goalkeeper Kris Rake made 10 saves to earn his second clean sheet of the season, standing up to a Terrapin attach that recorded a 20-8 advantage in shots. Rake lowered his goals-against average to 0.79. "All of the guys on the back line did a great job for us tonight," said W&M's first-year coach Chris Norris, a 1995 graduate of the college. "To shut out a team that scores like Maryland does is a tremendous accomplishment for our team defense. It couldn't have happened without a great effort from our whole team. The defensive intensity began with our back line and spread up through the midfield and the forwards." Three minutes into the second of two possible 10-minute overtime periods, freshman defender Michael Yakovac sent a cross into the penalty area and Thomas headed it home. Only moments earlier, Rake had saved a shot from Terps forward Jason Garey who entered the game leading the nation with 10 goals. The Tribe quickly went the length of the field for the winner. "Tonight we ran into a team that was highly motivated and committed to defending," Maryland coach Sasho Cirovski said. "I felt like we controlled the pace and the flow of play, but they made the most of their opportunity." Each side had a number of scoring opportunities with Maryland nearly taking a lead in the eighth minute when junior defender Chris Lancos nailed a header off the crossbar. Seconds later, Rake made his first save of the night, denying senior forward Abe Thompson's rebound attempt. The Tribe also misfired on two chances early with a header by junior striker Pat Scherder sailing just over the crossbar and a shot by junior midfielder Clayton Voss going wide of the left post. In the 64th minute, Maryland goalkeeper and Williamsburg native Noah Palmer stopped a pair of point-blank shots from Voss and Scherder. "We always try to maintain an even keel, because this is just one game in a long season, but this is obviously a tremendous win for our program," Norris said. "All we've done is get one win, but it's definitely a good one to have in the bank down the road." |
