CONWAY, S.C. (Tuesday, September 28, 2004) -- Sophomore midfielder A.J. Klerekoper's first goal of the season came late in the first half, sending North Carolina-Asheville to a 1-0 upset of No. 19 Coastal Carolina in a Big South Conference meeting before 237 at CCU Stadium tonight.

It was the second straight season that UNCA shocked the nationally-ranked Chanticleers after recording a 2-1 decision last year. The Bulldogs, winnng for the first time in 11 tries at CCU Stadium, are 4-3-1, 3-0 in the Big South after going 8-9-2 overall in 2003.

CCU fell to 6-2, 1-2 in conference. After losing 1-0 at home to Birmingham Southern Sunday, snapping a 17-match home winning streak, CCU has dropped consecutive Big South matches for the first time since 1998.

"We played very well on defense and pulled out a great win against a superb team in Coastal Carolina," Asheville coach Steve Cornish said. "We weren't at full strength today with some of our lads being hurt. However, our guys did a wonderful job hanging in there and finding a way to get a result."

The Bulldogs won despite being outshot 20-4 and playing without starting midfielder Greg Yelverton and striker Daniel Bandoly. CCU fired the first eight shots of the game. Asheville didn't manage a shot until the 42nd minute, but it produced the match's only goal.

Junior forward Jordan Holthouser's indirect kick was headed into the right corner of the net by Klerekoper with 41:24 elapsed.

"We've had some tough results here over the years, but today we found a way to get a victory," Cornish added.

UNCA freshman goalkeeper Daniel Pereira made nine saves to make that tally stand up, earning his second shutout of the season.
