AMHERST, Mass. (Monday, September 27, 2004) -- A trio of freshman scored in the second half, lifting Massachusetts past Holy Cross 4-1 and giving Jim Rudy his 200th victory as UMass coach before 247 at Rudd Field this afternoon.

Rudy is 200-101-16 (.656) in 17 seasons at UMass and 274-124-22 (.679) in 24 overall seasons, making him the fourth winningest coach in NCAA women's Division I history.

Prior to arriving in Amherst, Rudy coached both the men's and women's teams at Central Florida. The men's team went 129-58-16 (.675) from 1975-1987, while the women's team posted a 74-23-6 (.748) mark from 1981-1987.

"I am not counting at this point in my life," Rudy said. "What it means is that I have been around for a long time and I have had quite a number of good players. It is special."

Midfielder Jenny Roehrig, and reserve strikers Brit Canfield and Caitlin Footit found net for the Minutewomen (2-5) after the game was tied 1-1 at intermission.

Roehrig scored her third goal in as many games in the 68th minute, off assists from reserve freshman forward Vanessa Lima and sophomore defender Nadia Villaroel, for a 2-1 lead

Canfield netted her third goal of the season, knocking a shot off the left post in the 79th minute after an assist from junior forward Adair Blyler to make it 3-1.

Footit's first career goal, off a pass from sophomore reserve midfielder Elizabeth Weinsten, hit the crossbar and went in from four yards for a 4-1 advantage in the 88th minute..

Senior striker Lindsey Fairweather put UMass ahead 1-0 in the 37th minute with a nice turnaround shot from three yards out into the lower right corner of the goal following a pass from junior midfielder Lindsey Bellini.

Holy Cross (1-7) tied the game at 1-1 four minutes later on a tally from junior midfielder Allison Hayes.

UMass sophomore goalkeeper Kristin Walker made five saves as Holy Cross outshot the Minutewomen 12-10. Freshman Jessica Pietrowicz made one save in the Crusaders net.
