NCAA men Clemson dumps No. 5 Duke 3-1 as both schools end regular season.DURHAM, N.C. (Saturday, November 5, 2005) -- Senior midfielder Randy Albright put Clemson ahead for good early, while junior striker Dame Richards and freshman midfielder Bryson Moore added tallies after intermission, allowing the Tigers to defeat fifth-ranked host Duke 3-1 in an Atlantic Coast Conference match before 2,487 at Koskinen Stadiun tonight. After both schools closed their regular seasons, Clemson was 10-4-3, 2-4-2 in the ACC, while Duke had a 10-4-2 record, 3-3-2 in conference. Albright put Clemson ahead 1-0 with 6:27 elapsed, capitalizing on a Blue Devils turnover. A pass was deflected by Albright who gained control and shot past sophomore goalkeeper Justin Papadakis. Another Duke mistake put the Blue Devils in a two-goal hole. Richards scored his team-high seventh goal of the season just 2:48 in to the second half when Papadakis tried to clear a ball, but it was blocked to Richards who knocked the ball home from in front of the net to make it 2-0. Sophomore forward Spencer Wadsworth brought the Blue Devils back to within 2-1 at 57:53 when he flicked the ball in to the bottom left corner of the net for his fifth tally of 2005. Less than two minutes later, Clemson restored its two-goal advantage. Albright fed Moore in the middle of the penalty area and he beat Papadakis with 59:41 gone. Duke outshot the Tigers 14-9, but 12-2 in the second half. Clemson scored on its only two shots on goal in the closing 45 minutes. Junior Phil Marfuggi picked up the victory in the Clemson net with two saves. Papadakis also made two stops. Clemson became only the second team to score on the Blue Devils in the first half of a game this season. The other was Wake Forest on September 18. Duke is 0-4-1 when scoring less than two goals, the draw a 0-0 affair with North Carolina. |
