NCAA women Zwolski's strike gives Marquettte 1-0 upset of No. 12 Illinois.MILWAUKEE (Friday, August 26, 2005) -- Striker Christy Zwolski scored midway through the first half, giving Marquette a 1-0 upset of No. 12 Illinois before 554 fans tonight at the Howard Johnson Milwaukee Cup. In the other game of the doubleheader, freshman forward Jeannette Lorme nailed a shot from 20 yards in the 61st minute, giving Northwestern a 1-0 decision over Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the tournament host. Otherwise, ranked teams were almost completely successful on the opening day of the 2005 season. Visiting Florida State rolled over No. 25 Southern California 4-0 on a first-half goal by Viola Odebrecht, assisted by India Trotter, and tallies after intermission by Cici Shell, Sel Kuralay and Trotter In matches between ranked teams, second-ranked North Carolina drubbed No. 14 Tennessee 7-1 with forward Heather O'Reilly, a star with the United States women, finding net twice in Topeka, Kans. Striker Tiffany Weimer scored three times, leading No. 6 Penn State past 21st-ranked Washington for a 3-2 home victory. Defending NCAA champion and No. 1 Notre Dame received two goals and four assists from senior striker Katie Thorlakson and three goals from freshman forward Kerri Hanks in demolishing New Hampshire 11-1 in the Vermont Banknorth Classic. Thorlakson put the Irish ahead for good with 12:45 elapsed off an assist from Amanda Cinalli. Marquette (1-0) made Zwolsky's tally -- a shot from the top left of the penalty area that sailed high over goalkeeper Lindsey Carstens -- stand up with a strong effort by its opportunistic defense. "Give credit to Marquette for the energy they came with and the passion that they played with tonight," Illinois coach Janet Rayfield said. "That was the factor they had that made the difference in the game." Later in the first half, Carstens made a diving save to her left to keep her side with one at intermission. Illinois (0-1) did not manage its first shot on goal until the 60th minute. Two minutes later, Marquette keeper Laura Boyer did well to snag Illini junior forward Jessiaca Bayne's cross before it reached the foot of senior striker Natasha Karniski. Late in the match, Illini sophomore midfielder Kristy Weeks put a ball in the net from five yards, but was ruled offside. Each team took nine shots with Marquette putting four on frame to three by Illinois. Northwestern and UWM each took eight shots with NU putting five on goal and the Panthers six. "It's a very winnable game for us,"UWM coach Michael Moynihan said. "Even though the shots were even, we still had enough quality chances to come away with a win." |
