(Sunday, October 23, 2005) -- Senior striker Christine Sinclair saw her NCAA Division I record streak of scoring a goal in 17 straight games come to an end this afternoon, but it didn't stop No. 2 Portland from drubbing visiting West Coast Conference foe San Diego 5-0 before 2,198 at Merlo Field.

Hours earlier on the East Coast, Penn State senior forward Tiffany Weimer equaled Sinclair's mark. She found net in top-ranked Penn State's 3-0 triumph in a Big Ten match at Michigan State. Weimer, who also set a school and Big Ten record with 83 career goals, gets a chance to make the NCAA record her own when the Nittany Lions visit Minnesota Friday night.

Both Weimer and Sinclair scored in their 15th consecutive outing on October 14, tying the Division I record Brandi Chastain of Santa Clara set in 1990. Two days later, Sinclair took the record to 16 with a goal in a 1-1 draw with Pepperdine, while Weimer and PSU had a day off.

On Friday, Weimer pulled even with Sinclair at 16 by scoring in the Nittany Lions' 4-2 decision over Michigan. Later that night in the Pacific time zone, Sinclair had a pair of goals in the Pilots' crucial 3-1 West Coast Conference triumph over Santa Clara, taking the record to 17.

With a 3-0 lead at the break tonight against San Diego, Sinclair's teammates pumped numerous balls in Sinclair's direction, trying to keep her record going . "She's so unselfish," said red-shirt freshman forward Megan Rapinoe. "We were trying to set her up and it was almost like we were saying, 'Just take every ball and go,' but that's not her style."

"Everyone on the team wanted her to score a goal more than she did," senior midfielder Colleen Salisbury said. "She is so team-oriented, which is a tribute to how great of a player she is."

Sinclair did have an assist against San Diego, her eighth of the season and 30th of her career, giving her 210 career points, seventh-best in Division I history.

Sinclair, who has 100 career goals, the sixth women in Division I to accomplish that milestone, still leads women at all levels this season with 29 goals and 66 points. She had scored a goal in every game this season, with the streak beginning in last year's finale.

Weimer has also scored a goal in each match of 2005 and has 24 goals, tied for second at all levels with freshman Erin Menard of Centre College in Division III.

PSU (17-0), which at 9-0 with 27 points has secured the top seed in the Big Ten tournament, can close a perfect regular season with victories against Minnesota Friday and at home against Navy Sunday.

Portland (16-0-1) can complete an undefeated regular season by winning next Sunday at San Francisco and November 5 at home with Saint Mary's, both WCC games. The Pilots are in first place at 4-0-1 and can clinch the league title by winning at least one of those outings. The WCC does not have a tournament.
