BUIES CREEK, N.C. (Tuesday, October 10, 2006) -- Campbell has one of the top goal scorers in the country, but it was an own goal and great goalkeeping that gave the Camels a 1-0 upset of No. 9 North Carolina tonight in a non-conference match before 1,481 at Eakes Athletic Complex tonight.

Campbell freshman goalkeeper Bryce Kenny, making his first career start, preserved the triumph by making a kick save to deny UNC senior striker Ben Hunter from point-blank range in the 88th minute.

Campbell (7-5-1), enjoying its largest home crowd in at least 17 years, ran its home record to 6-0, led by Kenny, who made nine saves. Junior striker Willy Guadarrama, who has six goals and four assists this season, had 21 goals and four assists a year ago, leading NCAA Division I with 1.05 goals and 2.3 assists per game.

Campbell recorded its first victory over an Atlantic Coast Conference member since a 6-3 win at Maryland on October 13, 1993. Since then, CU was 0-20-1 versus ACC schools and had lost four straight to ACC opponents since a 1-1 draw with Duke on September 17, 2003.

"Obviously, this is a great win for our program," said coach Doug Hess, whose Camels are now 1-6-1 against the ACC. "Even with all the chances Carolina had, our team defended well. For Bryce as a freshman -- what an introduction to the college game -- he made some really big saves. Overall, tonight was a snap shot of what I want all the time, from our effort on the field to the emotion of the crowd."

UNC (10-3-2) entered the match with an 18-0-1 record against non-conference opponents in the regular season since the start of 2005. The Tar Heels last lost a non-league regular-season contest at North Carolina-Greensboro on September 29, 2004, and had posted 22 straight victories against such opponents prior to last Tuesday's 3-3 with visiting High Point.

Campbell won its third straight after junior midfielder Jairo Zambrana's corner kick was redirected by UNC sophomore midfielder Michael Callahan into his own net with 15:19 remaining.

UNC, 4-0-2 in its last six outings, nearly pulled ahead in the 49th minute when Hunter carried into the Camels penalty area, but Kenny deflected the shot and junior defender Michael Hutchison cleared the ball from in front of the goal.

In the 57th minute, Guadarrama's header was stopped by charging UNC senior keeper Justin Hughes. Eight minutes later, Hunter elevated to drill a header, but it went down the middle and Kenny snagged it.

The Tar Heels outshot CU 17-4, 9-2 on frame, but only four of UNC's 12 shots after intermission were on frame.

[6] Wake Forest 1, Connecticut 0

STORRS, Conn. -- Junior defender Julian Valentin scored in sudden death to give sixth-ranked Wake Forest a 1-0 decision over Connecticut in a non-conference match before 1,839 at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium.

Valentin's shot was only the third on net for the Demon Deacons (11-2-1), who raised their road record to 5-0.

With 2:57 elapsed in a second and final 10-minute overtime period, Valentin headed home a direct kick from senior midfielder Ryan Solle. WFU was awarded the free kick after a UConn foul about 40 yards up the left sideline. Solle drove a hard ball into a crowd in front of the net and it was Valentin who got his head on it.

The goal was Valentin's second of the season and it was Solle's 25th career assist, putting him in second place all-time at WFU, four behind Justin Moose.

Wake Forest junior goalkeeper Brian Edwards made one save in each half for his eighth shutout of the season and 26th of his career. Freshman keeper Matt Sangeloty made three stops, all in the second half for the Huskies (8-4-2).

Providence 2, [18] Brown 1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Sophomore forward Timothy Ritter's third goal of the season with less than six minutes remaining sent Providence to a 2-1 non-conference decision over No. 18 Brown before 326 this afternoon at Glay Field.

The Friars (10-3), which last defeated Brown (8-2-1) in 1993, reached double digits in victories for the first time since 1984. PC, 7-4-9 in 2005, is assured of its first back-to-back winning seasons since 1986-87

Reserve junior midfielder Hadrien Toure played a through ball to Ritter, whose low 15-yard right-footer eluded Brown sophomore goalkeeper Jarrett Leech at 84:40.

The Friars took a 1-0 lead 59 seconds before intermission when substitute freshman striker Benjamin Wexler recorded his first collegiate goal. After a scramble in front of the net, Wexler, who was falling, fired a right-footer from five yards out into the right corner of the net. Toure was credited with an assist,

The Bears pulled even when senior midfielder Ian Premo drove a cross to sophomore forward Dylan Sheehan, who headed the ball into the top left corner of the net at 55:18.

PC outshot the Bears 14-12. Senior Chris Konopka made three saves for PC to six for Leach.
