ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (Thursday, September 7, 2006) -- Senior striker Ashley Foster scored her first goal of the season in overtime, sending No. 17 Texas past New Mexico 2-1 in a non-conference match before 848 at UNM Soccer Complex tonight.

"We handled a physical team and possessed the ball well tonight," Texas coach Chris Petrucelli said.

Foster ended the contest 4:04 into sudden death. After receiving a pass on the right side of midfield, she carried through two defenders, approached the penalty area and drove a shot that just eluded the reach of diving sophomore goalkeeper Shannon Adragna.

"Ashley hit a great shot, left-footed from 25 yards out," Petrucelli said. "Ashley is a dynamic player who is capable of scoring from a distance with both feet."

Adragna made a great save with six minutes to go in regulation, diving to stop Texas senior midfielder Amy Burlingham on a breakaway.

A pair of senior forwards combined to give New Mexico (3-2) a 1-0 lead with 3:58 elapsed. Bridgette Sanchez fed Kristine Sweat, who beat sophomore goalkeeper Dianna Pfenninger from 25 yards into the right side of the net.

Texas (3-1) responded to equalize at 1-1 with 51:38 gone when senior midfielder Carrie Schmit tucked a shot away from inside the box off a rebound of a bouncing pass from Burlingham. Sophomore defender Kasey Moore had served the ball to Burlingham.

"After that first goal, our defense shut them down for the next 87 minutes," Petrucelli said. "We worked our way back into a position to win."

Two of UT's victories have come in overtime, following a 1-0 decision over Illinois in extra time Sunday.

Texas outshot UNM 14-6, but neither goalkeeper was too busy. Pfenninger and Adragna each made one save.

"We matched them well and we were a handful for them," UNM coach Kit Vela said. "The girls have a lot to hold their heads high about. It was a good lesson for us because it will help us get to that next level in conference. Texas has some special players and both teams played well."

Sophomore defender Stephanie Logterman made her first appearance of the season for the Longhorns after returning from the United States under-20 team which finished fourth in the world championship tournament in Russia.

No. 14 California 3, Air Force 1

MORAGA, Calif. -- Junior striker Stephanie Wieger scored late in the first half, while senior forward Julia Schnugg added found net early in the second to break a tie and give No. 14 California a 3-1 triumph over Air Force before 185 at the Saint Mary's College Fall Classic at Garaventa Field.

While the Golden Bears are undefeated at 4-0-1, Air Force remained winless at 0-4-1.

"Air Force was better than we expected," Cal coach Kevin Boyd said. "They're a solid team. Their results prior to this don't do them justice. We scored a couple of good goals. I thought we could have scored a few more as we generated an awful lot of chances."

Cal wore pink wristbands imprinted with the initials "KW" in memory of Kim Ward, the mother of senior defender Emily Ward who passed away Tuesday after a battle with cancer.

"We're dedicating these games to the Ward family," Boyd said.

Eighteen seconds after AFA had tied the match, Wieger exploited a miscue by Air Force goalkeeper Erin Wallace and poked home her first goal of the season for a 2-1 advantage with 39:34 elapsed

Schnugg extended Cal's lead to 3-1 in the 54th minute when she streaked down the left flank and was is stride when she received a right-side pass from junior striker Bri Wiles. Schnugg tucked her shot into the right corner of the net for her first tally of 2006 to make it 3-1.

Wiles also registered her first goal of the season to put Cal up 1-0 lead after 20:46. Cal senior forward Katie Ratican saw her attempted cross intercepted by a Falcons defender, who made an errant back-pass that left Wiles an easy tap-in to an empty net.

AFA sophomore striker Katherine Taylor tied the game at 1-1 with a 35-yard half-volley to the top right corner of the net at 39:16. It was the first tally allowed this year by the Golden Bears, who have scored six themselves.

Taylor accounted for all three of her team's shots with Cal holding a 15-3 edge. The Falcons scored on their only shot on goal, while the Bears hit their target six times.

Michigan State 2, Cincinnati 0

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Freshman striker Lauren Hill continued the torrid start to her collegiate career, scoring a pair of brilliant goals and leading Michigan State tp a 2-0 decision over Cincinnati before 123 at Old College Field.

Hill has six of MUS's eight goals as the Spartans have gotten off to a 2-3 start.

Each of Hill's goals were the result of smooth finishing of nice setups by her front-line mates. In the 10th minute, junior striker Maureen Pawlak beat a defender to the ball, moved down the right sideline and crossed into the penalty area. As the ball flew past, Hill met it with a right-footed swinging side volley and nailed the left corner, putting MSU ahead 1-0.

The Spartans broke through again in the 73rd minute when Pawlak, 30 yards out, passed to sophomore forward Kristi Timar. Timar carried down the left flank before crossing into the box for Hill to put away a header.

"It was a team win," MSU coach Tom Saxton said. "We talked before the game about not waiting for things to happen, but going out there and making things happen. For the first 15 minutes of each half, we really took it to them."

Freshman Andrea Kaminski made 13 saves in net for Cincinnati (2-2-1) while MSU held a 22-7 shots advantage. Spartans junior keeper Nicole Galas made three stops.
