Charlie Davies recorded five goals and two assists last week, leading Boston College (6-4) to a pair of easy victories. He scored two second-half goals and added an assist in a 5-1 victory over Quinnipiac and followed that with three goals and an assist in a 5-1 triumph over Atlantic Coast Conference foe North Carolina State.
Davies' 11 goals and five assists through the weekend left him one point short of breaking the school's single-season record of 28, shared by Casey Schmidt (2002) and Brian Siracusa (1993). The school record for goals in a season is 13 by Charlie Mundhenk in 1970.
Joseph Lapira, the SoccerTimes.com "Player of the Week" for August 28-September 4, became the first repeat member on the men's honor roll this season after a week in which he scored four goals to lead No. 15 Notre Dame (7-3-2) to a pair of Big East victories.
Lapira, who is tied for the NCAA lead with 13 goals, scored twice last Wednesday in the first 11 minutes in a 4-0 triumph over Marquette. In the second minute, he shot off the post and then converted the rebound. Nine minutes later, he took a pass from Matt Besler, dodged a couple of defenders and drilled a high shot into the net.
Mike Hessemer
Lehigh
junior defender
Scotch Plains, N.J.
While Lehigh (8-1-1) equalled its season scoring high, Mike Hessemer made sure the Mountain Hawks' lead stood up with his performance in Saturday's 4-0 home victory over American in the Patriot League, its only match last week. While Lehigh's defense has been one of the stingiest in NCAA Division I, it was Hessemer, a co-captain, that stood out against AU. He cleared one ball off his goal-line and stopped another shot from inside the 18-yard-line among his four blocked shots in the vicinity of the penalty area.
Hessmer, a mechanical engineering major, is part of a veteran defense that includes three seniors -- goalkeeper Jim Morahan, and backs John O'Reilly and Joe Verdi, as well as freshman Adam Welch. Through Sunday, Lehigh was second in nation in goals-against at 0.39 and also second with a shutout percentage of .700. Only one of the Mountain Hawks' four goals allowed came at home and opponents have averaged only 3.6 shots on goal per match.
Hessemer is one of eight Mountain Hawks who have started all 10 games this season
