West Virginia is off to one of the best starts in school history and Jarrod Smith is a large reason why. The Havelock, New Zealand, native was instrumental in the No. 13 Mountaineers (5-0-1) picking up a pair of victories. He had a goal and assist to defeat Cincinnati 2-0 Friday, then provided two tallies to down Louisville 2-1 Sunday en route to a 2-0 start in the tough Big East.

Against Cincinnati, Smith put WVU ahead in the 53rd minute when he buried a rebound, then fed freshman Ryan Gillespie for his first career goal in the 83rd minute.

Smith gave the Mountaineers an early lead against Louisville by heading in a corner kick and later broke a 1-1 tie with another eight-yard header. Despite missing the first two games because of a team suspension, Smith has now scored a team-leading four goals, including three game-winners. WVU is hoping to reach 8-0-1, the school's longest unbeaten streak to start a season.

The Germany native tied NCSU 1-1 in the 12th minute with a shot from the top of the penalty area off a pass from Adam Cristman, then put U.Va. ahead for good with an unassisted tally in the 62nd minute. This followed his Monday heroics when his goal in the 88th minute edged then-No. 24 UCLA 1-0.
