Jarrod Smith
West Virginia
senior forward
Havelock, New Zealand
West Virginia is off to one of the best starts in school history and Jarrod Smith is a large reason why. The Havelock, New Zealand, native was instrumental in the No. 13 Mountaineers (5-0-1) picking up a pair of victories. He had a goal and assist to defeat Cincinnati 2-0 Friday, then provided two tallies to down Louisville 2-1 Sunday en route to a 2-0 start in the tough Big East.
Against Cincinnati, Smith put WVU ahead in the 53rd minute when he buried a rebound, then fed freshman Ryan Gillespie for his first career goal in the 83rd minute.
Smith gave the Mountaineers an early lead against Louisville by heading in a corner kick and later broke a 1-1 tie with another eight-yard header. Despite missing the first two games because of a team suspension, Smith has now scored a team-leading four goals, including three game-winners. WVU is hoping to reach 8-0-1, the school's longest unbeaten streak to start a season.
