    Maxwell Griffin played an important role in UCLA (4-2-1) defeating two highly-rated opponents last week. He recorded two goals and an assist as the Bruins edged then-No. 6 Santa Clara 2-1 Friday and followed that by handing No. 10 San Francisco its first loss 2-0. This allowed UCLA to climb 10 spots to become the ninth-ranked team in the nation.

    The two UCLA goals against Santa Clara came in a 19-second span and Griffin played a role in both. He gave the Bruins a lead by putting away a rebound at 66:36, then followed by assisting Jason Leopoldo's first goal of the season. He celebrated his 19th birthday Sunday by staking UCLA to a lead by taking a pass in the box from Chance Myers, splitting two defenders and scoring to make it 1-0.

    Griffin leads the Bruins with five goals and 11 points -- no other player has more than one tally. For the same period, he was also selected "UCLA\Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week."

    Sinisa Ubiparipowic didn't save his dramatics for last. He got Akron (6-1) off to a good start Wednesday when he scored the game's only goal with 29 seconds remaining to give the Zips a 1-0 decision over Oakland, preventing Akron from heading to overtime for a fourth straight outing. He took a free kick from just above the 18-yard-line and buried it in the top right corner of the net to register his second consecutive game-winner.

    On Sunday, Ubiparaopovic assisted Pablo Moreira's decisive goal midway through the first half and later added a pair of tallies as Akron downed Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne 3-0 in the Mid-American Conference opener for both schools.

    The sociology\criminal justuce major leads the Zips in virtually every offensive categorry -- goals (5), game-winning goals (tied with 2), assists (5), points (15), shots (30) and shots on goal (14).

    Kurt Morsink had a hand in six goals as James Madison (5-1) rolled to a pair of easy victories. The kinesiology major, who has dual Costa Rican and United States citizenship, distributed four assists in Wednesday's 5-0 romp over Howard. The school record for helpers is five, set in 1072.

    Morsink, whose younger brother Kyle is a striker for the Dukes, scored a goal and assisted the eventual game-winner Saturday in a 5-1 triumph over Albany. He has recorded a goal or an assist in every game this season and leads the Colonial Athletic Association in goals (5), assists (6) and points (16).

    Brad Earl led Eastern Illinois (7-2) to a three victories away from home over the week, including winning twice to capture Wisconsin-Green Bay's Nike Classic crown.

    On Saturday, Earl put away EIU's first overtime goal since 2004, finding net in the 96th minute to edge rival Western Illinois 1-0. He had two shots on goal in the Panthers' 4-2 decision over Georgia State Saturday and followed the next afternoon with two strikes within a period of 79 seconds to down host UWGB 3-0. With the first multiple-goal effort of his career, Earl has four tallies, matching his total from last season.

    Washington junior forward Kevin Forrest was the leading force, finding net three times for sixth-ranked Washington (7-0) which used a pair of shutout victories to capture its Husky Fever Classic championship over the weekend.

    The entreprenership major started Friday when he notched two tallies as the Huskies disposed of Northern Illinois 5-0. He followed that with another goal in Sunday's 2-0 win over Marshall.

    Forrest is off to a stellar start this season with his nine goals in seven games placing him second in the NCAA Division I statistics with 1.29 goals per game. His average of 2.71 points per match puts him third in the nation.

    Fredriksson was the major offensive force for Sacred Heart (3-2-1) last week, scoring five goals as the Pioneers won two games and lost another in overtime.

    He struck twice in SHU's 3-2 overtime triumph Tuesday over over Holy Cross, including putting away the winner with a header of Jason Tessitore's cross in the 97th minute. He also registered his side's lone goal in Friday's 2-1 double overtime setback to host Wisconsin-Green Bay in the opener of the Nike Soccer Classic.

    On Sunday, the windsurfing enthusiast scored twice more Sunday in a 3-1 win over Georgia State. Fredriksson is tied for the Northeast Conference lead with six goals and is fourth inthe league with 12 points.
