Carrie Dew
Notre Dame
sophomore defender
Encinitas, Calif.
Carrie Dew has already established herself as a dominant defender, strong in the air, quick to the ball. In Notre Dame's 2-0 Big East victory over Louisville Sunday, she demontrated her offensive skills, scoring the decisive talli with 16:10 remaining. Taking a pass from Michele Weissenhofer, Dew carried into the left side of the penalty area and laced a rising shot into the right side-netting for a 1-0 lead.
From her central position, Dew led a stifling defensive effort that allowed Louisville only four shots, none on goal, the third match this eason in which an Irish goalkeeper was not called on to make a save. That top-ranked Irish (9-0) have allowed only 21 shots on frame, shutting out seven of their nine opponents and concededing only two goals.
Notre Dame quite possibly would have another clean sheet two days earlier, but a nasty storm forced abandonment of their meeting with Cincinnati. The Irish led 1-0 and had permitted only one shot on goal after 50 minutes.
Dew is a key member of the United Staes under-20 women who recently finished third in the world championships in Russia.

Stephanie Lopez
Portland
junior defender
Elk Grove, Calif.
Because of her responsibilities as captain of the U.S. under-20 women and their trip to Russia for the world championships, Stephanie Lopez has only played four games for No. 5 Portland this season and she quickly proved her value as a leader of the Pilots back-line.
Lopez, who plays the left flank, was particularly effective last week as the defending NCAA Division I champion Portland (7-2-1) won a pair of road games. After blanking Arizona 2-0 Friday, handing the Wildcats their first loss at home, Lopez also contributed the game-winning goal against Northern Arizona in a 4-0 whitewash two days later.
While Lopez, a psycholgy major, routinely shuts down opponents attacking down her side, she also has displayed a valuable instinct of knowing when to back up her central backs. With Lopez in charge, the Pilots squelched Arizona, permitting six shots, but only one on frame.
Against Northern Arizona, Lopez served a ball from the left side that found the right corner of the net for a 1-0 advantage in the 40th minute. Whether the ball was intended as a cross might be a matter for debate, but Lopez celebrated her first career goal. NAU managed only four shots with but one on goal as the Pilots posted their fourth straight clean sheet.

Heather O'Reilly
North Carolina
senior forward
East Brunswick, N.J.
Heather O'Reilly scored three goals in No. 2 North Carolina's two outings last week, none more important than the pair, including a late winner to defeat then-second-ranked Florida State 2-1. She also contributed an unassisted tally Sunday in a 6-1 rout of Miami (Fla.).
The Tar Heels (10-1) entered the last Thursday's Atlantic Coast Conference meeting against FSU and took a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute on the O'Reilly's 50th career collegiate goal. Tobin Heath carried the ball down the left flank before dropping the ball to an open O'Reilly. The education major looked like she was going to advance, but saw an opening and fired a shot from 28 yards that scraped the bottom of the crossbar and went in.
After the Seminoles tied the match, O'Reilly provided the game-winner on a counter-attack with seven minutes to go. Taking a pass from defender Whitney Engen, O'Reilly split the defense and then sent a spinning shot that found the lower left corner of the net.
Just like both tallies against FSU, O'Reilly scored from outside the box against Miami, beating a defender and firing a shot into the the top right corner of the net.
O'Reilly has 37 international appearances with the U.S. women.

Ferguson had a special week. Not only did she score three goals in two games, two of those, including the winner, coming in struggling Mississippi State's stunning 3-2 upset of then-No. 8 Tennessee, she also became the first Bulldog to find net in four straight matches.
Ferguson had six goals during her streak. Against Tennessee, her second tally came off a free kick in the 85th minute to sink the Volunteers. Sunday, she gave the Bulldogs (2-7) a shortlived 2-1 lead in a 3-2 loss to Georgia. Ferguson's seven goals are second in the SEC; her 14 points are third.
