San Diego eliminates Riverside 2-1 before the storm on Wednesday.

HEMET, Calif. (Tuesday, June 13, 2000) -- The San Diego Flash (A-League) escaped with a one goal victory over the Riverside County Elite (D3).

Riverside County lost its starting goalkeeper to injury in the 12th minute, but managed to take a 1-0 lead into halftime when Joe Owen converted a shot in the box in the 44th minute. A missed San Diego penalty kick in the 52nd minute had the Elite's home crowd ready for an upset, but Carlos Farias made up for his miss at the penalty spot by scoring an unassisted equalizer in the 56th minute and assisting on the second Flash goal in the 60th minute, before being ejected in the 72nd minute.

The Elite was unable to capitalize on their one-man advantage over short-handed Flash and the 2-1 scoreline was enough to advance the Flash to the Third Round against the winner of tonight's match between the L.A. Galaxy and Seattle Sounders.

The Flash competed in the U.S. Open Cup in 1999, and were defeated 3-2 in the third round by the Los Angeles Galaxy. Thirteen of the current San Diego players saw U.S. Open Cup experience with the Flash in the 1999 tournament. Mugruel Dumitru scored an amazing six goals in San Diego’s second round win versus D3 Arizona, and Carlos Farias tallied three goals and one assist in the tournament. Former Flash player, Antonio Robles, who is currently the Elite’s leading scorer, tallied two goals and four assists in Open Cup play for the Flash.

June 14th will be the busiest day in U.S. Soccer's 87-history for high-level club matches. The 2000 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup will see 30 of 32 teams in action on "Elimination Wednesday" as the team's battle it out for a berth in the tournament's third round. Roughly 24 hours of soccer will played around the country that night, with the U.S. Open Cup field of 32 teams being narrowed down to sixteen. Tonight's San Diego - Riverside County match is the only one of the second round matchups that was rescheduled for another day due to venue availability.
