Dallas Burn top Tennessee Rhythmn 3-0.

DALLAS -- MLS' Dallas Burn advanced over the Tennessee Rhythm's scoring three goals against a short-handed team in in a downpour at the Cotton Bowl. The game was played in a driving thunderstorm and was suspended by lightning for 25 minute with one minute to go in the first half.

Chad Deering scored a pair of goals, Jason Kreis had two assists and Johann Noetzel was required to make just one save for the Dallas Burn of MLS which dispatched the A-League’s Tennessee Rhythm at the Cotton Bowl.

Dallas will face the A-League’s Minnesota Thunder in the third round.

Outshooting the Rhythm 21-3, Dallas controlled play for most of the contest. However, the game remained scoreless until an injury to Rhythm midfielder Danny DeVall opened the door for the first Dallas goal.

With a man off the field, Rhythm midfielder Doug Schenkel was stripped of the ball in the Rhythm end of the field by Burn forward Jason Kreis who passed ahead to Dearing. On a through ball by Kreis, Dallas went ahead 1-0 in the 27th minute as Deering dribbled past keeper Brian Covey to score.

Alavanja made it 2-0 with an assist from Kreis in the 72nd minute. Three minutes later, Deering netted an unassisted goal.

The game was the second time the Dallas franchise has ended Tennessee's Cup dreams. In 1998, the Burn who knocked the Rhythm's predecessor, the Nashville Metros, out of the Cup quarterfinals with a 3-1 victory in Dallas.
