THESSALONIKI, Greece (Friday, August 20, 2004) -- The United States women have yet to play particularly well, but they are also two victories from capturing gold medals at the Summer Olympics. Striker Abby Wambach scored a strange goal early in the second half to give the U.S. a 2-1 decision over Japan and set up a semifinal meeting with 2003 World Cup champion Germany.

KINGSTON, Jamaica (Wednesday, August 18, 2004) -- Brian Ching was not one to waste a second chance. The reserve striker, who earlier missed an opportunity to tie the game with a point-blank header, made no mistake when he drove home a close-in shot in the final moments of regulation, giving the United States men a 1-1 draw with Jamaica in the CONCACAF semifinal-round World Cup qualifying opener for both nations.

KINGSTON, Jamaica (Wednesday, August 18, 2004) -- It looked like it was going to wind up being a long night for the United States men at Jamaica's National Stadium before a late goal by reserve striker Brian Ching gave the Americans a 1-1 draw and broke the hearts of a previously joyous capacity crowd. The standings point the U.S. stole could prove to be valuable.

(Tuesday, August 17, 2004) -- The United States women got the draw they needed to win Group G of the Summer Olympics and advance to a quarterfinal match against Japan. However, the 1-1 draw with Australia was hardly impressive. Midfielder Kristine Lilly scored early for the U.S., but Joanne Peters gave Australia the tie with a goal in the 82nd minute.

(Monday, August 16, 2004) -- United States striker Conor Casey and FSV Mainz 05 won for the first time since being promoted to the 1Bundesliga Saturday with a 2-1 home victory over Hamburg SV. In the 2Bundesliga, American Gregg Berhalter was named the captain of Energie Cottbus although the defender is didelined with facial injuries.

(Wednesday, August 11, 2004) - The season is just starting, but United States midfielder DaMarcus Beasley is firmly entrenched as a starter on the left side of midfield for PSV Eindhoven of the Netherlands Eredivisie. Beasley acquitted himself well tonight in his first taste of the European Champions League, going the distance in PSV's 3-2 loss to to FK Crvena Zvezda (Red Star) in the road leg of the two-match, third-round series.

(Tuesday, August 10, 2004) -- After a summer of uncertainty, United States defender Greg Vanney has worked himself back in the starting 11 for Bastia in France and he played well, going 90 minutes for the Corsicans who defeated Strasbourg 2-1 in the Ligue 1 opener for both teams. Midfielder Bobby Convey made his English League Championship debut, coming off the bench in the first half of Reading's 1-0 loss to West Ham United.

OTTAWA, Canada (Sunday, August 8, 2004) -- Two of the top three scoring teams from the regular season met in the W-League championship game yesterday, but neither could score. After playing 120 minutes -- including 30 minutes of sudden death -- the Vancouver Whitecaps took the title 4-2 in a penalty-kicks tiebreaker.
