    (Monday, August 23, 2004) -- Reserve striker Heather O'Reilly scored in the ninth of 30 minutes of overtimes, lifting the United States to a 2-1 decision over Germany in the Summer Olympics women's soccer semifinals. Brazil edged Sweden 1-0 in the other semi.   Full story

    KINGSTON, Jamaica (Wednesday, August 18, 2004) -- Brian Ching was not one to waste a second chance. The reserve striker, who earlier missed an opportunity to tie the game with a point-blank header, made no mistake when he drove home a close-in shot in the final moments of regulation, giving the United States men a 1-1 draw with Jamaica in the CONCACAF semifinal-round World Cup qualifying opener for both nations.   Full story

    CARSON, Calif. (Wednesday, August 18, 2004) -- The Los Angeles Galaxy named Steve Sampson as its new head coach today, two days after Sigi Schmid was fired. Sampson, 47, became the fourth coach in the Major League Soccer club's history and immediately took over with a Saturday home game with the Chicago Fire impending.   Full story

    Reserves spark late rally that allows U.S. to steal important road point in Jamaica.

    KINGSTON, Jamaica (Wednesday, August 18, 2004) -- It looked like it was going to wind up being a long night for the United States men at Jamaica's National Stadium before a late goal by reserve striker Brian Ching gave the Americans a 1-1 draw and broke the hearts of a previously joyous capacity crowd.     Draw with Australia sends Americans to quarterfinal meeting with Japan.

    (Tuesday, August 17, 2004) -- The United States women got the draw they needed to win Group G of the Summer Olympics and advance to a quarterfinal match against Japan. However, the 1-1 draw with Australia was hardly impressive. Midfielder Kristine Lilly scored early for the U.S., but Joanne Peters gave Australia the tie with a goal in the 82nd minute.   Full story

    CARSON, Calif. (Monday, August 16, 2004) -- The Los Angeles Galaxy fired coach Sigi Schmid today although the club had the best record in Major League Soccer. Team president and general manager Doug Hamiltion said he expected to name a new coach soon. In the meantime, assistant coach Martin Vasquez will run the club with assistance of the remaining technical and coaching staff.   Full story

    Mainz, Casey get first 1Bundesliga victory; Berhalter is named Cottbus captain.

    (Monday, August 16, 2004) -- United States striker Conor Casey and FSV Mainz 05 won for the first time since being promoted to the 1Bundesliga Saturday with a 2-1 home victory over Hamburg SV. In the 2Bundesliga, American Gregg Berhalter was named the captain of Energie Cottbus although the defender is didelined with facial injuries.   Full story

    (Sunday, August 15, 2004) -- United States midfielder DaMarcus Beasley scored in his Dutch Eredivisie debut for PSV Eindhoven which started its season Saturday by defeating RBC Roosendaal 5-2. PSV trailed at the half, 2-1, but shifted into high gear with four goals in the final 32 minutes. Beasley scored the final one in the 75th minute.   Full story

    Americans just about clinch Olympics Group G after surviving Brazilian scare 2-0.

    THESSALONIKI, Greece (Saturday, August 14, 2004) -- The U.S. survived a horrid first half, but rallied to defeat Brazil 2-0 in the Summer Olympics on Mia Hamm's penalty kick and a low drive by Abby Wambach after the break.     (Wednesday, August 11, 2004) -- Hannover 96, with United States defender Steve Cherundolo in the starting lineup, went down in defeat to Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 on Francoaldo Franca's goal in stoppage time in the 1Bundesliga. Cherundolo, wearing a captain's armband, is being expected to carry a large load for Hannover, but had some responsibility Saturday on both Leverkusen goals.   Full story

    (Wednesday, August 11, 2004) - The season is just starting, but United States midfielder DaMarcus Beasley is firmly entrenched as a starter on the left side of midfield for PSV Eindhoven of the Netherlands Eredivisie. Beasley acquitted himself well tonight in his first taste of the European Champions League, going the distance in PSV's 3-2 loss to to FK Crvena Zvezda (Red Star) in the road leg of the two-match, third-round series.   Full story

    (Tuesday, August 10, 2004) -- After a summer of uncertainty, United States defender Greg Vanney has worked himself back in the starting 11 for Bastia in France and he played well, going 90 minutes for the Corsicans who defeated Strasbourg 2-1 in the Ligue 1 opener for both teams.     OTTAWA, Canada (Sunday, August 8, 2004) -- Two of the top three scoring teams from the regular season met in the W-League championship game yesterday, but neither could score. After playing 120 minutes -- including 30 minutes of sudden death -- the Vancouver Whitecaps took the title 4-2 in a penalty-kicks tiebreaker.   Full story

    (Friday, August 6, 2004) -- Portland's hopes for the upcoming men's soccer season were dealt a blow today when midfielder Josh Simpson signed a two-year contract with Millwall of the English League Championship, the nation's second division.     EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (Sunday, August 1, 2004) -- If Mia Hamm does retire, as promised, by the end of the year, the United States striker will go out at the top of her game.
