U.S. beats Switzerland to advance to U-20 semis. Califf, Downing and Albright score.
The U.S won Group A with a 1-0-2 record and will face Belgium Saturday. The winner of that match moves on to Monday’s final against the survivor of the other semifinal between Italy and Norway. The Americans had played earlier scoreless ties with Wales and Norway.
Switzerland took a 1-0 advantage in the ninth minute on an unassisted goal by Christophe Scherier who was ejected with a red card in the 63d minute.
Califf tied the score in the 58th minute off a pass from Matt Goldsmith. Five minutes later, Downing, a second-half substitute, put the Americans in the lead 2-1 with Chris Albright getting the assist.
With the U.S. holding a man advantage for the final 27 minutes, Albright finished the scoring in the 66th minute getting a feed from Jamar Beasley.
U.S. goalkeeper Nick Rimando was not required to make a save.
