LAVEZZOLA, Italy (Monday, April 13, 1998) -- Jamar Beasley and Nino DaSilva scored second-half goals to give the United States under-20 men a 2-0 victory over Norway today to earn third place at the Paolo Valenti Tournament.
The U.S. was relegated to the consolation match after losing 1-0 to Belgium in a foul-plagued Saturday semifinal on a goal in the fourth minute of injury time.
The Americans, coached by UCLA’s Sigi Schmid, finished the tournament with a 2-1-2 record, conceding only two goals in the five matches
Today, Beasley of Fort Wayne, Ind., put the U.S. ahead 1-0 in the 56th minute off a pass from DaSilva (Hoffman Estates, Ill.). DaSilva doubled the advantage 20 minutes later, converting an assist from McKinley Tennyson.
There were 67 fouls called in the semifinal loss to Belgium, 39 against the Americans. Each team had a player ejected late in the match.
