Stewart, Ramos score U.S. beats Kuwait 2-0.
PORTLAND, Ore. (Sunday, May 24, 1998) The United States used goals from Ernie Stewart and Tab Ramos to register a fairly easy 2-0 victory this afternoon over Kuwait in front of 25,343 rain-soaked fans at Civic Stadium.
The U.S. closes its preparations for the World Cup with a match Saturday against Scotland in Washington, D.C.
The Americans, who outshot Kuwait 14-0 in the first half, opened the scoring in the 37th minute when Stewart finished off a 30-yard pass from midfielder Brian Maisonneuve, who used the outside of his right foot to bend a ball through the Kuwait defense. Stewart ran onto the ball on the left flank and slotted his shot home with his right foot from 11 yards.
In the second half, the continuing U.S. pressure resulted in a second goal when substitutes Tab Ramos and Preki Radosavljevic combined for an 82nd-minute strike. Collecting the ball in the center circle, Radosavljevic faked past two defenders to create space and carried the ball toward goal, then played it to the left wing for Ramos.
Ramos took the pass outside the penalty area, cutting back inside the box and unleashed a right-foot rocket just inside the far post
In goal, Kasey Keller was called upon to make just two routine saves in earning his and the team's third consecutive shutout
The Americans played without three potential World Cup starters due to injury: midfielders Frankie Hejduk (right hamstring strain) and Cobi Jones (left knee sprained) and striker Brian McBride (concussion). All three are expected to resume training early this week.
Defender David Regis, 29, who obtained his U.S. citizenship on Wednesday, was impressive in his first start as a marking back.
