U.S. women Akers nets 100th as Americans cruise to 6-0 rout of Portugal.
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Saturday, January 30, 1999) --
Michelle Akers became the fourth woman
to score 100 goals in international competition -- knocking in a corner kick late in
the first half -- and Kristine Lilly
added a pair of tallies as the U.S. throttled Portugal 6-0 at Lockhart Stadium today.
Lilly had her first career three-goal game and Akers also found net when the Americans
beat Portugal 7-0 Wednesday near Orlando, Fla.
The U.S. team broke open the match with four second-half goals as Portugal gradually was worn down by constant U.S. pressure before a crowd of 5,152 at Lockhart Stadium. Mia Hamm also scored for the U.S., which out-shot Portugal 38-1. The U.S. dominance came in its second of 19 matches leading to the Women's World Cup June 19-July 10. The Americans led 2-0 at halftime, before Danielle Fotopoulos made it 3-0 when she connected deep inside the box in the 52nd minute. Lilly scored her second goal of the match when she chipped in a shot from 18 yards out in the 71st minute. Two minutes later, Hamm broke deep into the Portuguese goal and, on a give-and-go with Tisha Venturini, flicked in a shot from three yards out for her 103rd career goal. Akers scored her 100th goal off a corner kick by Tiffeny Milbrett in the 40th minute. Portugal appeared intent on forsaking any attack, dropping its entire lineup back to protect the goal. After several near-misses in the first 20 minutes of the match, the U.S. finally broke through with Lilly's first goal. Shannon MacMillan also scored for the U.S. team.
