Lewis sparks comeback, Olsen nets winner to drop Derby County 2-1.
DENVER, Colorado (Tuesday, July 13, 1999) -- Eddie Lewis scored the tying goal and 12 minutes later fed Ben Olsenís game-winner as the United States erased a one-goal halftime deficit and defeated Englandís Derby County 2-1 before 20,376 at Mile High Stadium tonight.
Ben Olsen put the U.S. ahead in the 76th minute, after Lewis worked his way into the left side of the box and crossed to the far post. Olsen faked going toward the goal to shed his defender, then cut back to be in position to head home the deciding tally.
Twelve minutes earlier, Lewis tied the score at 1. Defensive midfielder Chris Armas played a ball to the top of the penalty area where forward Ernie freed himself from a defender and took a right- footed shot that was blocked into the path of Lewis, who drove the ball from seven yards off goalkeeper Mart Poom into the net.
Forward Dean Sturridge put Derby ahead 1-0 in the 26th minute after working a combination with Darryl Powell at the top of the U.S. penalty area. Sturridge's perfectly placed chip from just inside the penalty box caught keeper Brad Friedel off his line where he could only watch helplessly as the ball looped over his head and into the net.
Derby County would also hit two crossbars during the course of the match, the first of which ricocheted high in the air, was headed by U.S. defender Gregg Berhalter, and cleared by Stewart. The second near-miss caromed off the crossbar and downward to the right post before it was knocked to safety by the U.S. defense.
Berhalter nearly leveled the score in injury time of the first half. His left footed blast was heading for the upper left corner, but Mart Poom extended well to make a spectacular save.
The U.S. will train in Denver for the remainder of the week while preparing for the Confederations Cup, which will take place from July 23 to August 4 in Mexico. The Americans will play in Group B and face New Zealand (July 24), Brazil (July 28) and Germany (July 30) at the Jalisco Stadium in Guadalajara.
