Cila's three goals spark 6-1 rout of El Salvador.SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (Sunday, May 9, 1999) -- Jordon Cila scored three goals and added an assist -- including netting the tying and go-ahead tallies -- as the United States under-17 men rallied from a 1-0 deficit, using five second-half scores to crush El Salvador 6-1 in the first match of a two-game CONCACAF qualifying series before 20,000 at Flor Blanca Stadium.
The U.S. now carries an almost insurmountable plus-5 advantage into the return match May 22 in Columbus Ohio. The series winner earns the third and final CONCACAF representative in the world championship which will be played November 10-27 in New Zealand.
Cila now has 13 international goals spread over 10 matches. The U.S. is 10-0 in those outings.
After falling behind 1-0 in the 26th minute on an own goal by Akwari, Cila scored his first goal in the 42nd minute off a Kyle Beckerman pass to tie the game 1-1 at halftime.
Cila's second goal put the U.S. ahead for good 2-1 in the 63d minute with Seth Trembly providing the assist.
The next two tallies came courtesy of midfielder DaMarcus Beasley, who assisted Onyewu in the 67th minute and Akwari, who redeemed himself by making it 4-1 in the 77the minute.
Thompson, a newcomer replacing suspended striker Landon Donovan (red card), entered the match in the 80th minute and made it 5-1 off a Cila feed three minutes later. Cila finished the scoring unassisted a minute later.
