Charles picks final 18 for qualifying tourney.CHICAGO (Friday, April 7, 2000) -- Two weeks before the first game of the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament, United States under-23 men’s coach Clive Charles announced his final 18-player roster, along with seven alternates.
The 18 players will head to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Monday for a week of training, then depart for the Hershey, Pa., site of the qualifying tournament on April 17 with three alternates joining the squad.
Team USA is scheduled to scrimmage on April 12 against the Miami Fusion and April 15 versus a Miami select team.
"These were some very tough choices I had to make," said Charles, who led the Under-23's to a bronze medal at the 1999 Pan Am Games and on overall 7-4-6 record last year. "But when it comes time to play, I feel we'll be putting the best possible team out there to represent the United States and hopefully qualify for the Olympics in Sydney (Australia)."
The U.S will play opening group games April 21 and 25 in Hershey, with one of the games against Canada. The semifinals are on April 28 and the championship match on April 30. The title game, however, is largely ceremonial, however, because both semifinal winners qualify for the Summer Games.
The top two teams of each of the three-team qualifying groups make the semis.
