Denton, Winters called in to replaced injured.(Sunday, April 16, 2000) -- Defender Eric Denton of Major League Soccer’s D.C. United and midfielder Brian Winters of the A League’s Minnesota Thunder were called in to the United States under-23 men’s team after a rash on injuries hit the Americans preparing for the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament that starts Friday in Hershey, Pa.
Injuries to midfielders Joey DiGiamarino (Colorado Rapids) and Sasha Victorine (Los Angeles Galaxy) required two of the team’s seven alternates be activated to fill he 18-player roster that will try to advance to the Summer Games in Sydney, Australia, in September.
DiGamarino, who has had nagging groin injury, and Victorine, who suffered a similar groin injury in an MLS match on April 8, returned home yesterday.
Denton, a graduate of Santa Clara University, who normally plays left back, could appear as a sub on the back line or in left midfield. Winters, who played for U-23 coach Clive Charles at the University of Portland, will likely assume his natural central or the defensive midfielder position coming off the bench.
